Optionsscheine ermöglichen die gehebelte Partizipation an steigenden (Call) und fallenden (Put) Kursen eines Basiswertes. Dabei wird der Preis nicht nur von der Bewegung des Basiswertes, sondern auch von anderen Faktoren wie z.B. der Volatilität oder der (Rest-) Laufzeit beeinflusst. Liegt der Kurs des Basiswertes bei Fälligkeit unterhalb (Call) oder oberhalb (Put) des Basispreises kommt es zum Totalverlust des eingesetzten Kapitals.
