On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. An irreverent journal of auto opinion, the Burnouts gather every week to break down the latest headlines in the jalopyspace. From donks and ricers to Elon and autocross, this show has the latest news and hottest opinions on the web. Change our minds.
Tonight, Sumanth drives a car with so much drip he became an influencer overnight, Dan’s oft repeated smack talk on Ford comes full circle, and Cole loses even when he wins. And of course we’ll run you through some going ons in the autoverse, and probably talk about Doge Coin because it’s so hot right now.…
Tonight Cole freaks out a whole bunch of guys on dirtbikes in the desert, Sumanth experiments with trepanation, and Dan stands around some parking lots. As usual we have a really long Heel/Toe, and Cole has a flashback driving a VW that might break as much as his first one did back in High School.
Tonight, we talk about trucks that only youtubers take off road, an EV GT from Ingolstadt with range that a SCUD would make fun of, Sumanth will talk smack about ‘Ole Musky, and Cole drives 337 miles to get a haircut. It’s the first show of 2021 for the Burnouts, and we thank you for your patience while we overcame techmo-logical difficulties, crippling loneliness and boredom.…
It’s the annual Burnouts Holiday Shopping show brought to you by all the guys in vans! We’ve got a bunch of ideas for that gearhead that you never know what to buy, besides a 30 pack of Michelob Ultra wrapped in foil and a family-size box of band aids. So light those scented candles and pour some dairy free hot cocoa and let’s gather under the Mistletoe for a while, shall we?…
Tonight, we speculate about the most overhyped and underpowered sports car with a roof, we get mad at the Hummer EV, and Dan throws a pumpkin off the roof. Yank out that charging cable before driving off and join us, won’t you?
Tonight we’ve got some new yuge V8s, overpriced EV motors to spruce up your malaise 4x4s, Dan beats on somebody else’s cars, Sumanth gives out some poor financial advice, and Cole complains about some stuff that no one cares about.
Tonight we’ve got plenty of crap on celebrities, some salacious and embarrassing news on that politician you hate, and more vapid and unimportant conjecture about current events based on facts we heard on facebook. So pour a stemless glass of over oaked Pinot and settle in under that weighted blanket won’t you?…
Tonight we have some Deja Vu, because we’ve just done this podcast before, higher on the street, and you know this is the intro, calling you, and search is a mystery, standing on my feet, it’s so hard when I try to be me, woah. Whoever the hell owns Ram nowadays and Ford have a slap-fight over some big V8’s in trucks, both VW AND Tesla in the SAME corner, and we have some Deja Vu, because we’ve just done this podcast before.…
Tonight we go to Build a Bear, or play Build a Bronco since the mall is closed, run you through some interesting new powerplants in the Heel Toe, make fun of Sumanth like usual, and Dan rubbed shoulders at a safe distance with a favorite hotshoe of the Burnouts. Top off your fluids, and let’s start up the show.…
Tonight, we have big news on Ford Trucks, we talk about never having to lose your keys surfing the gnar ever again, and we make fun of Sumanth, again. Let’s get started shall we?
Tonight we tell you how Cops are combating the Bat Flu, SUVs that are getting V8s just in time for gas prices to rebound, and Dan shares some things he learned about essential worker's beasts of burden. And maybe we have Sumanth test driving a car instead of talking about Tesla.
Tonight on the show we have prancing horses, pony cars, and a bunch of hot takes about a once-common car-related business primed for a potential comeback. Oh, and happy birthday, X Æ A-12!
Tonight we find out if Toyota is fun again, some Tesla news for cone killers, and we break down the car loans longer than the line at Costco. Here we go...
Tonight we have conspiracy theories, Mazda silliness, Cadillac confusion, and bad ideas on how to spend your coronabux!
