Everybody wants a well-balanced dog that does not get easily aroused, can be taken out in public and knows how to self-soothe. Welcome to the second session of our three-part series on the three things every dog owner should do with their dog, regardless of its age. In today’s show we are going to be running through the practice of ‘sitting on your dog’ and the major benefits it has for teaching self-control, focus, and self-soothing. When we say, ‘sit on your dog,’ we don’t mean literally sitting on it, but rather sitting down on its leash for periods of at least 30 minutes. You’ll hear about how this practice will change the way your dog operates in the world as well as your relationship with it. We also break down every single thing you need to know when it comes to implementing this practice successfully, what to expect from your dog when you first start it, and everything in between, so be sure to tag along with us today!

Key Points from This Episode:

  • The power of ‘sitting on the dog’ while training it.
  • How to ‘sit on the dog’ by using the leash in different ways.
  • Benefits of sitting on the dog: teaching self-control, focus, and self-soothing.
  • The difficulty puppies have calming themselves and how sitting on their leash can help.
  • How sitting on the dog gains their respect and trust.
  • Rewarding dogs using a release of pressure.
  • Ignoring the dog and not touching them so they learn to self-soothe.
  • Making the period of sitting on the dog last for at least 30 mins.
  • Remembering to vary the location where you train by sitting.
  • Having other people in your family conduct the sitting.
  • When to start the practice of sitting on the dog to ensure trust.
  • Making sure that the puppy is tired when you start to sit on them
  • Being ready for the puppy to throw a tantrum when you first start the practice.
  • Training the puppy and being firm six times before it begins to learn.
  • Mastering the sitting practice in the house first.
  • How you can sit on the dog even if they are over a year old.
