While annulments and legal separations are much less common than divorces, there are a few times that it makes sense, but there are certain qualifications that you have to meet to consider them. Listen in while I spell out the differences, and when it makes sense to choose these rare types of separation.
An annulment means the marriage never happened, or was not legally valid. It’s very rare to qualify for an annulment. In Utah, to qualify for an annulment, you have to meet 1 or more of 4 specific requirements, like if it was fraudulent, a spouse was still married to someone else, you married someone closer than a 2nd cousin, or were younger than 18.

Legal separation is also rare. It might make sense if you belong to a religion that bars divorce or if there is an immigration issue. You aren’t technically divorced but you have a legal order that outlines how you interact and co-parent. But you can’t get married again without getting a divorce.
