Pedro Gouveia, MD, PhD, graduated in Medicine in 2004 at NOVA Medical School | Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (NMS|FCM), Portugal. He completed his General Surgery residency program in 2013 at Hospital de Matosinhos, after an Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellowship at the Paris Breast Center (2012/2013). During his residency program he has successfully designed and implemented a Walking Clinic and a Fast Track program applied for upper GI and colorectal surgery. He is a board certified breast surgeon by the European Society of Surgical Oncology since 2015. In 2021 he has received a PhD degree at Lisbon Medical School with the theme: 3D Digital Breast Cancer Surgery with Augmented Reality. Pedro is a dedicated breast specialist, designer and researcher at the Breast Unit of Champalimaud Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal since 2013. Pedro is also the Oncoplastic Breast Consortium Coordinator for Portugal since 2019 and member of the Senology Portuguese Society since 2017. He was recently selected to be a member of the European Society of Surgical Oncology Education and Training Committee (position will start at October 2022). He has authored and co-authored several papers on international journals and authored two book chapters. He has also authored several communications in medical and technological conferences. He is Associate Editor of Clinical Surgical Oncology journal since 2022. He is reviewer for The Breast Journal and World Journal of Surgery. Pedro’s research interests include breast cancer, oncoplastic breast surgery, breast reconstruction, 3D breast modeling, surgical breast simulation, augmented reality, connected care/health, big data, artificial intelligence and 5G network with edge computing. Pedro actively participated in European and National research projects: Assistant researcher of the Picture Project, an FP7 EU (grant number: 600948) funded consortium between 2013 and 2016. Overall budget € 3 218 224. The PICTURE project aims to address this issue by providing objective tools to predict the aesthetic outcome of breast conserving surgery; BCCT.plan consortium as chief medical scientist, a PT2020 funded project (NORTE-01-0247-FEDER-017688) between 2016 and 2020. Overall budget € 532 516. It aimed to create a novel simulation and treatment planning environment between radiological diagnosis and surgical cancer therapy, including an objective tool to predict the aesthetic outcome of breast cancer conservative treatment; Principal investigator of the MetaBreast project, a proof-of-concept trial that aims to investigate a new digital and non-invasive method for intraoperative localization of non-palpable lesions using artificial intelligence and augmented reality - Breast 4.0. The first successful surgery took place at the Breast Unit, Champalimaud Clinical Centre - January 23, 2020. With this project Pedro won the Best and Greatest in Portuguese Technology - Innovation category and Honorable Mention at Prémio Banco Carregosa 2022.
