Dr. Sana Shaikh is currently the Director of School Operations for Springfield Public Schools. She is also the founder of her diversity, equity, and inclusion company called TimeED (Taking Initiative, Making Equity in Education).

She holds two Bachelors from the University of California, Berkeley in Political Science and Near Eastern Studies – Islamic Civilizations with a minor in Global Poverty and Practice. She has two Masters, one in Urban Studies from Johns Hopkins and one in Social Policy and Management from Brandeis University. Her PhD is in Social Policy and Management from the Heller School of Social Policy and Management.

Sana is passionate about anti-racism and equity, and has over ten years of experience working in education policy, research, and program management and operations. She was a 2011 Teach for America corps member where she taught high school in east Baltimore for two years.

In this conversation, we discuss:

  • Reading her Dad’s emails at 8 years old as prep to attend Harvard University
  • The moment Sana realized she was a “boring” teacher and had to rethink her model of teaching
  • How to approach systemic racism in education with South Asian parents

This interview was eye opening for me, and helped me understand the underlying issues that apply to race and education. Please enjoy my conversation with Dr. Sana Shaikh and her story fighting for educational equity.
