The Upside Play on Mac Jones, Potential Landing Spots for Cam Newton & the Ben Simmons Problem
Manage episode 301263570 series 2862024
On today’s episode, Jason kicks things off by sharing his thoughts on the New England Patriots’ decision to cut team captain Cam Newton and name rookie Mac Jones their starting quarterback. This feels like an upside play for the Patriots. Unlike Newton, who is limited as a passer at this point in his career, Jones has shown in the preseason that he’s capable of playing several different styles. What’s more, recent history tells us that it’s usually a quarterback taken later in the first round that tends to pop early in his career because he’s surrounded by better talent around him (See: Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes). With a loaded defense and a revamped receiving core, Jones could see early success in New England. On the flip side, Newton heads into free agency facing a ton of uncertainty. Jason argues that there are probably just three potential landing spots for Cam: the Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers. The Panthers are a familiar spot for Newton and they don’t have a legitimate franchise quarterback in place, the Texans are in desperate need of any kind of star power given how bad their overall roster is, and the Dolphins clearly don’t believe in Tua Tagovailoa. Finally, Jason closes the show with a quick thought on the report that Ben Simmons has demanded a trade out of Philadelphia. We’ve known for a while that Simmons and the Sixers were headed for divorce, but this news could help speed up the process. Only problem is, with Simmons threating to boycott training camp, will Philly be forced to take a lesser deal just to get their disgruntled star out of town?
