Story one: Fulton, Mitchel and Shaw (Chicago)

March, 2003 in south-side Chicago a man was found murdered and burned to death in an alley. Police eventually focused on interrogating a 17 year old girl who, after days of 10 hour interrogation, accused three men of the murder. Police chicanery involving false statements of one man confessing and fabricated evidence put one man on death row and the other two in prison for life. Charges were finally dismissed in May 2020 followed by lawsuits accusing police of lying and falsifying evidence, calling detectives "among the most prolific officers in the Chicago Police Department in terms of accumulating allegations of misconduct from members of the public and fellow officers.”

Story two: Phillips (Detroit)

This is the sory of a man that left home at age 12, living on and surviving on the streets of Detroit. Eventually arrested as a young man and after a short prison stint, he found a well paying job, married and had one child. Also eventually, he gravitated back to the streets and maintained a double-life as a married man with a bad habit with heroin and falling in with a bad crowd. He was falsely accused and incorrectly identified in a line-up and was sentenced to 7 years in prison for armed robbery. While incarcerate, one of his former party friends falsely implicated him an a grisly murder and subsequently sentenced to life without parole.

After 38 years in prison, the newly formed Detroit conviction Integrity Unit reviewed his case and found him actually innocent and released him.
