What is Linux?

From smartphones to cars, from supercomputers to home systems, the Linux operating system is used everywhere.

Linux, which has been around since the mid-90s, has created a user base for itself from many industries and many continents. Those who know the subject know that Linux is used almost everywhere.

It is used in your phones, cars, fridge and more. While Linux runs most of the Internet, supercomputers using this operating system are helping to make great inventions. But before Linux was used on desktops, servers, and embedded systems all over the world, it was the most reliable, secure, and worry-free operating system.

Another difference of Linux from other operating systems is that it is open-source, that is, it can be accessed free of charge and different people can make improvements on it and can release operating systems called distributions. Some of the distributions are paid while others are available for free. We can show distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Linux Mint as examples.

Same Windows XP, Mac OS X, Windows 8; Like Windows 10, Linux is an operating system. An operating system is a name given to the system that enables and manages the connection with the hardware in your desktop computer or laptop. Without an operating system, it would not be possible to install and use various software on your computer. Linux operating system consists of the following parts:

Bootloader: This component of Linux is responsible for the startup process of your computer. For many users, this process is seen as the screens until the operating system starts up.

Kernel: We can say that this is exactly the section called Linux. The kernel is the foundation of the system and provides management of the processor, memory, and other devices. The kernel is the lowest level of the OS.

Daemons: These services are background services.

Shell: You may have heard of the Linux command line before. This is the section called Shell and it is the area where you can manage the computer with commands. This feature of Linux is also known as the part that at least once scared users away from it. However, we can say that this is no longer the case. On modern Linux desktops, you no longer have to use the command line.

Graphic server: It is the subsystem that enables the graphics on your monitor to be displayed.

Desktop: This section is where the users can interact. It is possible to talk about the existence of many different desktop structures.

Examples of these are GNOME, KDE, XFCE.
Other applications: It does not include all the applications you might want to use on the desktop. There is much software that you can download and install for Linux as well as for Windows and Mac.
