“在美读大学系列”之——美国的大学喜欢什么样的大学生？

今天又是美国大学系列节目，我们今天要聊一聊：美国的大学最看重本科生什么，美国大学在哪些方面会着力培养本校的本科生。

1.美国大学的目标：建立多元化的学生群体

Most universities aim for a hard working and diverse student body.

很多美国大学都提倡要建立hard working（努力）并且diverse（多样的） student body（学生群体）。

A diverse student body is a community of students who are interested in a lot of different subjects and careers. A diverse student body是一个学生群体，里面的学生对不同的科目和职业都会感兴趣，简单地说，就是强调多样性的生源。

David在UCLA（加州大学洛杉矶分校）大一刚开学的第一周，就见到了各种人才，有爵士乐音乐人（jazz musician），还有一些医学预科生（pre-med students），程序员（ coders），新闻专栏作家（news column writer），他们都是一些在校的大学本科生。

大学里的学生都have a lot of unique talents（有很多独特的才能）。

比如，David就有一位朋友会下blind chess（盲棋），能够memorize the board and play without looking。

2.美国大学为什么致力于“培养多元化学生群体”？

A diverse student body意味着学生能go into different careers（从事不同的职业），这也就意味着，the student body will have accomplishments in all of those career paths（在所有的职业领域取得成就）。

这个是基于长远考虑的，学生毕业以后走向不同的行业，都很有成就的话，很明显，in a lot of different career fields，就会增加本校的global impact（全球影响力）。

Ivy League（常春藤联盟） schools have many students like that.

Colleges want to develop these kinds of students so that they can improve their brand（提升自己的品牌价值）.

A school like Harvard is a great example. 哈佛大学就是一个很好的例子。

因为Harvard 有像Mark Zuckerberg（扎克伯克）这样的alumni（校友），就非常能增加the name value of the school（学校的知名度），并且可以lead to more applications（吸引更多申请）。

Alumni非常重要，一方面是因为他们可以reflect the value of a school’s education（反映学校的教育价值），另一方面是因为，对于母校在读的学生，they can also offer resources or donations（提供一些资源或者是捐赠）。

3.美国大学如何培养多元化学生群体？

1).可以switch your major（换专业），并且程序简单。

At college, most of the time it is very easy to switch your major. 在美国大学换专业很简单！

这样的话，学生可以改变他们的plans for their career（职业规划），so that they have a higher chance of finding a career path that they are passionate about（更方便学生找到自己的专长和激情所在）。

David身边就有换专业的朋友。

Just a few weeks ago his friend changed his major from psychology to computation biology.从心理学换到了计算生物学。

换专业的程序也非常简单，只需要fill out a short form（填一个简短的表格），然后send it to a school email address（邮件发给学校）。

对于部分的专业，可能会more difficult to switch majors, 但大部分的专业，换专业的程序都很简单。

2).每个学生必须参加general education（通识课程）。

Most colleges have general education requirements. 大多数大学都有通识课程的要求，学生要学习一些其他科目的基础课程，比如musicology（音乐学）和political science（政治学）。

These classes can help people decide if they want to switch majors.

如果不确定是否想换专业的话，这些课能帮助学生做出决定。

There’s usually hundreds of general education classes of different categories.每个人上的通识课也不一样，学校里开设几百种不同种类的通识课。

学生被要求，to take a certain number of each category before they graduate（毕业前必须要从不同的门类里面选一定数量的课）。我们中国的大学也是这样要求的。

开设这种通识课的目的，就是帮助学生to get a more well rounded education（获得更全面的教育），to be able to explore their interests（发现自己兴趣所在）。

David身边就有同学，通过通识课，而发现了自己兴趣所在。

这位学生took a sociology general education class（修了社会学的通识课），之后她决定to add sociology as a minorto her economics major（学经济学的同时，辅修社会学）。

You can also do a double major.你也可以修双专业，只不过it is often a lot harder。

3).大学非常重视extracurriculars（社团活动）

Extracurriculars 是学生了解new careers ，并且meet other people with similar interests（碰到志趣相投的人）的很有趣的方式。

学校想要学生通过这样的方式，to make organizations and make connections with others（创立一些组织或者和其他人建立联系），所以，校方会set aside money（提供资金支持），还会安排counselors （指导老师）。

Extracurriculars就是社团、组织，比起通识课，它更能帮助学生找到兴趣所在，because they are not mandatory（不强制的）。

Extracurriculars是not mandatory，你愿意花时间去参加，那就说明是真的喜欢。

After you meet people with similar interests, that can lead to collaborations and contribute to a more diverse college community. 志趣相投的人在一起，就可以一起合作搞点什么。

比如，开头我们提到的David的jazz musician friend，就通过extracurriculars认识到一群人，并且组建了band，they go out to perform on weekends（周末出去表演）。

这种教育方式很棒，值得我们借鉴，通过通识课，以及课外活动，让学生可以从学术以及兴趣上找到自己兴趣所在，从而建立美国大学最看重的“学生生源多样性”（a diverse student body）

如果学生能够take advantage of these resources（利用这些资源）, 他们就可以在大学期间，find the right career path for them to contribute to in the future（找到利于未来发展的职业道路）。
