It may seem like a dated cliché now, but the idea behind putting missing children on milk cartons was a huge advancement in how the United States finds missing and exploited children. This tactic was a stepping stone to laws like Amber Alerts and photos in newspaper ads. Etan Patz’s disappearance was ultimately solved, but still left many questions around the guilt of his convicted killer.
