Manage episode 361648420 series 3426386
In this episode Jeff Wieland continues to explain the process of building a custom home. On previous episodes he explained Selecting a Builder, Working with an Architect and Designer. Today Jeff explains how construction begins on the new custom home and all the planning, time and thought that is needed before digging. It all starts with marking trees and deciding which will stay and which will go before the clearing begins. Next, the civil engineer will stake the property so everyone knows the homes position on the land. Erosion control, adding a temporary electric pole will follow. Will the soil need to be imported or exported from the site needs to be known? Following a process and making sure certain techniques are in place are so important during the foundation phase of a home. Excavation will begin next then grading while paying close attention to the elevation and considering the positive drainage away from the house. Footers will be placed in the hole and in the unexcavated areas like porches and garages. Forming the walls is a crucial step in making the home safer and stronger. The home is a system we follow and during this step we make sure everything is level, square and straight with the foundation. Next, in this phase after the walls are poured with concrete is protection with waterproofing and insulation board before the gravel backfill. The final step is making sure the grading is done properly with positive drainage away from the home.
