21:12In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into the hidden depths of our identities, exploring the imposter that lurks within us all and the shadow self that we often ignore. Drawing on the profound insights of Brennan Manning's "Abba's Child" and Thomas Merton's wisdom, we discuss how our false self can blind us to our true potential and hinder our connection with our highest selves. We distinguish between the imposter self and the psychological phenomenon of Imposter Syndrome, exploring how each affects our perceptions of self and accomplishment. We offer a unique homework assignment - a letter to your imposter - as a tool for self-reflection, self-understanding, and ultimately self-acceptance. Join us on this transformative journey, as we learn to unmask our false selves, embrace our authentic selves, and cultivate a deeper, more honest relationship with ourselves, with others, and with the Divine. 18:02In this meaningful episode, we explore the concept of the 'Wounded Healer' as described by spiritual guides Henri Nouwen and Brennan Manning. Drawing on Nouwen’s transformative idea that our deepest wounds could be a source of healing for ourselves and others, we delve into how struggles can lead to a profound understanding of our shared humanity. Jess dives in to how this work has changed her. That we are, in our totality, a gift. We all bring our unique tapestry of experiences to bear on the lives of others. Our purposeful work emerges not despite the pain but because of it. It motivated Jess to break the silence, to confront and share the acute anguish her family was and is still experiencing as we grappled with the terrifying fear of losing our child. Jess shares that she used to believe that she needed to wait until the dust had settled, until her trials had found resolution and she could tie it all up with a neat bow, before sharing how these experiences impacted her and, indeed, those around her. But that's the crux of the matter. What if the resolution we yearn for never comes to pass in the way we envisage? We also reflect on the poignant words of Rainer Maria Rilke, reminding us that everyone’s journey includes challenges and sorrow. Finally, we discuss the power of vulnerability and the courage it takes to turn our darkness into light, not only for our healing but also as a beacon for others. Join us on this journey of self-discovery and shared healing.…

Today we're diving into a topic that needs careful consideration: breaking the blame game. In recent years, there has been a growing trend of blaming parents for their children's mental health diagnoses. This phenomenon often stems from a desire to find a single cause or someone to hold responsible for the challenges faced by young individuals. However, it is essential to move away from this blame and shame cycle and approach mental health diagnoses in children with compassion, understanding, and a broader perspective. One of the best ways we can set goals that get results is to get clear about where we’ve been - because our past often impacts our future if we allow it. So in this episode, part one of goal setting, I want to help you reflect on 2021. Life can be crazy. There’s always work coming in and piling up, chores and errands to be run, people and relationships to take care of, and deadlines to be met. And if we are not careful enough, it’s easy to go into a frenzy, get extremely busy, but end up achieving very little. Think about the moments where you’ve seemed to be very busy, but surprisingly unproductive at the end of the day. Therefore, it’s important to not only slow down, but to take a pit stop to pause and reflect before continuing with the journey ahead. Here’s the truth; so many of us are feeling overwhelmed right now. And we "should" ourselves this time of year. These shoulds rob us of our peace. In this episode, I offer you three tools today to help you feel more peace during this busy season: 1. Feeling Your Feelings in Five Steps 2. We haven’t been taught how to deal with stress! And we’re more fried than ever. Anxious about our health, money, work. You name it. In the final conversation on the five barriers to joy, I discuss what happens when you're overloaded with worry. The kind of worry that pretends to be helpful and necessary. What you can do: Back up and breathe. Lengthen your exhalation. Research shows that when our exhale is a few counts longer than our inhale, the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain down through the neck to the diaphragm and abdomen, tells our nervous system to chill out. Our heart rate drops, blood pressure lowers, and the whole body physically calms down.…

In 2017, the Journal of Affective Disorders published study that the more time 18-22 spend on social media, the more likely they were to have symptoms of anxiety. So what can you do? Power down. But when we start spinning our wheels, we need to get clear about our goals and what matters. Here's where I love to discuss extrinsic goals - fame and wealth vs. intrinsic goals - personal growth, relationships and community. Researchers asked graduating college students about their aspirations and followed up two years later. Those who pursued extrinsic goals reported greater anxiety and poorer physical health despite their accomplishments, while the group with intrinsic goals cited greater well-being and self-esteem and fewer physical signs of stress. What to do: Look for bright spots. Not some toxic positivity here, but train your brain to see. Train your brain to watch for moments to capture. Stressful times will come and go. And name your primitive brain here.…
Welcome to this week's series: Top Five Barriers to Joy!! I'm so excited to discuss ways to overcome the top five barriers to feeling good. Listen, it’s a universal truth - we all are on some form of a pursuit of happiness. We want to feel less stress and more joy. There is so much information out there on the topic from TED talks to books to podcasts. So why do we still struggle? Why is wellbeing so hard to attain? I believe knowing something and applying it are such different skill sets. We consume the info thinking that is enough. In this series, I want to give you some activities to help you experience joy right now. So Day One's Barrier to JOY... Living for the future! We push our peace and joy into the future, thinking that if we just make more money or lose weight or our kids get older, then we'll feel joy. So our work is to recognize the good and hard now. To live now. To use the 5-3-1 method. 5 breaths 3 gratitudes 1 intention I can't wait to hear how this works for you! XOXO…
Oh, friends. I'm coming to you with something very near and dear to my heart. I want to discuss gratitude. Listen, we all know gratitude matters. Gratitude will change you and shape you. Gratitude will connect you and us and your heart to divine love. Gratitude heals us. Gratitude has so many benefits physically, psychologically and socially. But we often get mixed messages about gratitude. True gratitude actually comes after a process of surrendering to all of our emotions, even the hard ones. Toxic gratitude = not allowing yourself to feel anything and forcing yourself to deny true emotions through a list of how you "should" think and feel. (A term I made up, similar to toxic positivity.) Let's be clear here. We already have a long list of things we "should" do. Adding gratitude to that isn't helpful if it's only used as something to check off. Gratitude changes you when it's real. So the work - and the invitation - is to feel your feelings. This is the way to avoid toxic gratitude. I'd love to hear what you think of this concept!! Here's to a courageous week. XOXO PS. I'd also love to invite you to leave a review. Every review counts and helps this message of hope be seen by a wider audience.…

Often, at the end of the day, we experience something called decision fatigue. In this week's episode we are discussing decision fatigue and ego depletion, the role of sugar on our decisions, how we aren't broken when we get tired from making decisions AND what to do when you're cognitively fatigued. They report they try to get work done but end up trying to do everything all at once so get nothing really done at all. (And let's be clear, I certainly fall in this camp at times.) But then I started the Pomodoro Party! (I think I need to trademark this name; it's so catchy, right?) It's revolutionized how I work and focus, how I homeschooled Henry (and he's now teaching others about it!), and what I offer in the Courageous Life Society. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned in this life - and that I keep needing to relearn - is that if you don’t feel your emotions, they will begin to spill out all over the place. Imagine picking up your emotions and stuffing them into a backpack. A cute, brightly colored, designer backpack, but a backpack nonetheless. You place your emotions in there because you don’t want to feel the pain or maybe you don’t have time or the tools. So you begin collecting emotions. And the bag gets very heavy. You also notice that a few of the seams are starting to rip a bit. So you reinforce it, but you still keep stuffing more in. And suddenly, your bag breaks. You’re probably in the middle of a store or some other crowded place. Your emotions all spill out. You can’t help it now. They’re all there. So you pick them up and carry them around without anything to contain them. This might be you. You might be having all the feelings spill out all over the place. You’re so raw and unfiltered because it’s all too much. It is uncomfortable and disorienting. And you also might be thinking that you're sick of over-feeling at this point. But just hang on with me. You have to feel it all. All of it. As Carl Jung says - and I’m paraphrasing - “what we resist, persists.” And here’s the deal. I want to give you the tools to process your emotions so you don’t have to stuff anything down ever again. Learning to feel your emotions is one of the most important skills you will ever learn. Feel it to heal it, sweet friend. Can you imagine what the world would be like if we were all processing our emotions instead of distracting or overreacting to them? I also outline my recent perspective shift and how it's created deeper focus and intention in my life and business. Because what we look for is what we find. So what are you looking for right now? PS. If you find this episode helpful or insightful or moving, I'd love to invite you to send me a message at hello@jessicastong.com AND leave a review. I know you've heard the spiel, but reviews help tremendously. And why send me a message? Because I LOVE connecting and hearing from you! XOXOXO…
I'm back, baby!! You should know that I truly have missed you! I have to be honest, it's felt like a long road to get back to this place. From doubt to fear to entitlement to anger, I've experienced all the feelings. But I walked away with a feeling of profound gratitude. Gratitude for your support and your willingness to wait for me to feel it all. Gratitude that I walked away after a bruised kidney, broken rib, ridiculously persistent concussion and some embarrassment thrown in for good measure of course - knowing it could have been far worse. Gratitude that I could take time off, even if it meant I needed to scale down my outreach efforts for a short time. And from this gratitude, I found a new perspective. A renewed sense of purpose. In this episode, I discuss my purpose and calling as I want to bring light and love and meaning to others. I want to serve as an example of leading a business with a heart of love and for the purpose of giving back. And it is my prayer that every Lives of Courage emails, podcast and programs serve as a healing force for you and in this world. Maybe you are ready to make a change. Or maybe you need an empathetic ear. Maybe you are ready to live into your purpose. Maybe you just want to watch the hilarity. (And if you're in it for the laughs, I also hope you're following me on the Instagrams for the stories.) Wherever you are, I'm here for you. So please feel free to reach out and say hi. Let me know what you would like to hear about on podcast. Or maybe you just want to learn what coaching looks like in a 20 minute session from someone who has been deeply committed to personal and professional transformation since 2007 (and who has lived all of it herself) without any pressure or selling. XOXOXO…
Oh, friends. I’m on a highly encouraged break. (As one doc said, you get one brain. Treat it well.) So today is just a quick life and health update along with three questions: 1. How are you prioritizing what matters? 2. Are you waiting until something major happens that requires you to change? 3. Are you willing to say no to something to say yes to what truly matters? So I’m saying yes to healing and taking a short pause - see you all again in Sept. 14. Xoxoxo…

24:10Our attachment patterns, translated into and through our neural networks, affect all areas of our lives. Our relationships with ourselves are impacted by our attachments - what we think of ourselves and our beliefs about who we are and what we can do. These attachments also impact our relationships with other people. Today, let's dig deep into how our attachment styles are one of the primary forces shaping our relationship with God. . . . . . Stephen Covey discussed the term abundance mentality or abundance mindset in his 1989 best-seller, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. He said it is simply ”a concept in which a person believes there are enough resources and successes to share with others.” Our words create more abundance or scarcity. Our words form the thoughts we have around abundance and scarcity. The thoughts we tell ourselves and the words we use matter. What we tell ourselves about money and wealth today can change our story moving forward. So let’s stop focusing on what you don’t want. Instead, we’re going to focus on what we do want as if it's already done. . . . . . If you heard a ton of great information listening to this episode, I'd love to hear all about it! This week we’re discussing why we don’t treat ourselves, why so many women take care of others first, and why taking care of yourself and valuing yourself matters. The phrase "Treat Yo' Self" became popular when the show, Parks and Rec referenced it. On the show, the characters, Donna and Tom have a day where they buy luxurious items. As Tom explains, “Treat. Yo. Self. Once a year, Donna and I spend a day treating ourselves. What do we treat ourselves to? Clothes. Treat yourself. Fragrances. Massages. Treat yourself. Mimosas. Fine leather goods...It's the best day of the year." Together we can embrace this motto year round. Treating yourself doesn’t have to be about buying luxurious items and services. It can be, but you get to define what it is for you. . . . . . If you heard a ton of great information listening to this episode, I'd love to hear all about it! In this week’s live, I want to invite you to examine and change your relationship with wealth and hopefully expand your thinking around what it means to be financially free. We all have stories about our finances and wealth. No matter how much you earn now or how stuck in debt you are or how you’re doing as compared to others, your brain is always making up thoughts about money and abundance. We receive messages about wealth everywhere, from our homes, schools, social media, churches, TV shows and movies, books, friends, families, employers. And there are so many different messages about money that we hear from others or tell ourselves. Messages like: "Money doesn’t grow on trees." "Money is stressful." "I'm bad with money." What would happen if you opened you mind up to a new realm of possibility? What would happen if you were financially free? Today, I’m going to teach the name it, tame it, claim it behavioral technique focused on your thoughts on money and wealth. . . . . . 22:37We live in a disconnected world. We are so busy and overwhelmed. So many of us lose sight of what matters. So much of our life is spent avoiding and hiding. We try to outrun our inner world, by being busy, by performing acts, doing things for God, instead of being. Instead of inviting in - we focus outward. We perform. And how do you deal with this pain? How do you deal with your loss and sadness? How do you deal with these emotions? Today, we're going to look at: What does spiritual connection mean? “How you spend your days is, of course, how you spend your life.” – Annie Dillard I love teaching the spiritual formation tool called the Rule of Life. A Rule of Life is a commitment to live the life you’ve been called to live. I’m so excited to be chatting with you about coaching, how it works and how my clients get the results they want. We all need a little extra support at times -- and one of the best options is to work with a professional. No matter what point in life we find ourselves, we will experience challenges or pain or overwhelm at times. I think so many of us were raised to believe that if we can just figure it out on our own, if we just worked hard enough and made enough money, that we would be shielded from hardship. So we struggle without support. Coaching is a nonjudgmental, unconditional, open space where you can see you what your brain is doing. In coaching, I teach you how to take action, not from self-discipline but from changing your thoughts and emotions once and for all, and how to avoid being stuck in inaction and overreaction. Coaching almost always addresses an individual’s mindset and attitude by uncovering self-limiting beliefs and negative self-talk. A coach can help you discover the answers you're searching for by asking the right questions. Coaching supports transformation. I believe having a coach will change your life. Not only will you see that thoughts are not facts and that you can create new thoughts, but that you can also create any result you desire. . . . . . We all experience moments of pain. Some of us live with chronic conditions in which pain visits us frequently. Others experience intermittent pain, and it often blindsides them. Do you know that people feel emotional pain in the same areas of the brain that get activated as when they feel physical pain? It’s in the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex. In one study, these areas were activated during experimental social rejection from peers. In another real-life study, the same regions were activated when they viewed pictures of the former partner after a recent breakup. So while I’m talking about physical pain today, I want you to remember that pain is pain is pain. Today, I want to talk through some ways to help your brain manage physical pain. . . . . . Mental health professionals, spiritual writers from every tradition, and teachers all agree that the speed of our lives is becoming an ever-increasing problem. We are moving too fast, doing too much, and it is dramatically affecting our health, careers, relationships, sense of self, and our faith. We are exhausted. We are disconnected. In our effort to become over productive, we become counterproductive. We become addicted to doing. We are addicted to the hurry. . . . . . Boundaries define who we are and who we aren’t. Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: physical boundaries establish who may touch us and under what circumstances; mental boundaries allow us our own thoughts and opinions; emotional boundaries requires us to own our emotions and not take on the emotions of others. Oftentimes we live life in a reactive manner, but I believe our power comes from proactive living. So, often we say yes to things that we don't really want to do or, even if we want to do it, we don't have time for it. If we only have so much time in a day, a week, a month, we have to be clear about what matters to us. Most of us are well-rehearsed in overreaction and inaction. When your actions aren't organized, you overreact to every single thing there is to do. You get to choose your actions - and you can choose what you do based on our values. Today, I want to help you clarify your core values so that you can decide if what you are doing or want to do fits in with those values. . . . . . 19:08Just like mental clutter, physical clutter steals your focus, and makes you feel overwhelmed, distracted, and agitated. Your brain is so busy trying to process all of the visual stimuli that you can’t fully enjoy the moment. Have you ever spent a bunch of time cleaning something up only to have it get messy again a few weeks later? That’s because you didn’t get to the thought work that’s causing the mess in the first place. But you don’t have to wait until your brain is 100% decluttered. Let’s start now by also working on getting your physical environment in order. We have to DECIDE. We have to say GOODBYE. We have to CHANGE. Living decluttered and organized requires you to be willing to feel uncomfortable. Living a decluttered life expects you to be intentional and mindful about your brain AND your space. You can declutter your home in less time than you think—and without feeling completely overwhelmed—when you tackle it in small chunks of time every day. . . . . . We each have a personal history story that influences everything from our wellbeing to our beliefs about who we are to our perception of the world, whether we are conscious of it or not. Stories are an important part of who we are, and yet when we are overly attached to old narratives, it becomes difficult to step beyond our own limitations. The stories we tell about ourselves and our experiences matter. They shape our identity, impact our choices and behaviors and help us create meaning out of our lives. Our stories don’t just help us construct our identities, our stories are our identities. What happens to your thoughts if the stories you tell yourself about your experiences are of loss and failure and victimization? Can you change your thinking to rewrite your story? I believe you can with the right questions and coaching. . . . . . If you heard a ton of great information listening to this episode, I'd love to hear all about it! I LOVE talking about change, even when I used to hate experiencing change myself. But once I got over the self-created fear, and found freedom and something akin to excitement over how to do it, I was ready to tackle a lot of fear about change that has held me back. Many of us can cognitively process change, but when you ask us to experience it, to live through it, it's uncomfortable. So many people come to me and report they’ve tried to change and nothing seems to work. Please listen to me, nothing has gone wrong. Today, we’re going to chat about why it’s so darn hard to change and how to navigate change. Confidence is something everyone wants, but for so many people, it’s hard to find! Most women today aren’t confident. And frankly, this breaks my heart and this is why I do this work. Courage is not the absence of fear. Since childhood, we’ve been told that the true definition of courage is one of self-sacrifice and colossal acts of heroism. But I’d like to offer an alternative definition of courage - Courage is in the act of moving forward with fear. If you find yourself stuck because of fear and unable to move forward in courage, today, I want to teach you the AND method. I created this method and I truly believe that, when applied, it works and you will find courage in the face of fear! . . . . . If you’re tired of dreaming, tired of being stuck in inaction, tired of wanting to change but not knowing how, this is for you. I hear from so many women who just want to change their story. They want to start a podcast or youtube channel or start eating better or running again. They want to find time for themselves or take a trip or stop the hustling. They want to organize their closet or clean out the refrigerator or stop using their kids as an excuse to not be productive. I’ve heard it all. But most importantly, I’ve told myself the same stories. Stories like I have ADHD so of course I’m not good at focusing and getting things done. Stories like I have too many responsibilities in my home to ever grow a business. We often see others who seem able to do so much. They make a goal, get so much done AND in a short amount of time. Today, I want to share with you with their "secret" is and how you can learn to commit and follow through on your dreams and goals. . . . . . Life can be unpredictable, overwhelming or painful at times. What happens when we’ve lost our way or can’t see out of unspeakable grief? What can give us the hope we need when we feel like all is lost or we don’t know which way to turn? Today, I'm going to discuss everyday courage, why we need it, and how to get more courage. I’m super passionate about this as I’m on a mission to redefine courage and reshape the conversation on why courage is so darn important. Today, I want to teach you one of the most powerful techniques for shaping your own narrative about your life. In my years of experience in psychology and knowledge with coaching, together we can achieve any result you desire. You can change. You can do this work. And this tool isn’t anything new or unique to my coaching practice, but I want you to understand why it’s important. And how it allows you to truly see yourself and the circumstances of your life. It allows you to decide what you are thinking and feeling about yourself and your life. I want you to decide what you want to keep from 2020 and what you want to set aside. I don’t want you to carry anything you don’t want or that doesn’t serve you into 2021. . . . . . If you heard a ton of great information listening to this episode, I'd love to hear all about it! 35:55For many of us, this has been a really tough year. No doubt, some beautiful and wondrous things have happened in your life. And, you’ve likely had your fair share of struggles and setbacks too. We’ve survived some pretty significant national and world events. Like a pandemic. And an election. We’ve seen some major changes closer to home as well. Like loss and financial insecurity. Virtual schooling. All. The. Things. But after feeling our true feelings, we will get to choose to sit the feelings to the side for the next thought download and work session and/or create a new thought on the other side of feeling the emotion. Today, I want to talk you through our emotional experiences, how we think and process through the holiday season all using the TEAR process. Learning to feel your emotions is one of the most important skills you will ever learn. Once you are good at it, it can completely change your relationship with yourself and all the people you come in contact with because you won’t be reactive, but rather the compassionate observer. Can you imagine what the world would be like if we were all processing our emotions instead of distracting or overreacting to them? I think everyone needs to learn this process. Young and old. 25:09I want to share my experience and show you what happens in your brain when you're diagnosed or suspect you are sick. (And this applies to what happened when I was diagnosed with MS too.) You see, our primitive brains are designed to keep us from danger. So when we are sick, they are on high alert. There is so much fear. (Fears like: Will I die? Will I end up in the hospital? Will this exacerbate my other illnesses? Will I lose my job? Why my kids be okay? Who will take care of my kids? The list goes on.) Our brains also play a Blame-Shame Game. We just want someone or something to blame. It's easier that way. And then comes the guilt. Oh, the guilt. I also share this so you can help someone you care about if they're going through a tough time. When you know what might be going on in their head, it's easier to be there for them. And here's what I know for sure, people are kind and good and generous. Ask and accept help. And remember, you are stronger than you can ever imagine. . . . . . 41:40One of the things we did recently as part of the Courageous Life Society was a Courageous Confidence Challenge. As I recorded the video for this challenge, I was overcome with gratitude and inspiration for these women who are doing these things everyday to change their lives. We talk a lot about consuming information, talking about changing our lives, watching trainings on how to change our lives, etc., but then how do we actually apply it to our own lives? Your everyday courage looks like doing the things everyday that you have been avoiding because you’re afraid, because it make you feel shame and disappointment. You are worthy of so much more - and COURAGE ACTION will get you there! So many of my clients first come to me with a desire to change their thoughts. They're stuck in a pattern of negative beliefs or that their circumstances can't or won't change. They don’t know how to leap from what they’ve always thought to where they want to go. They see their thoughts as unchangeable. And so they feel stuck and overwhelmed. Have you ever felt this way? Stuck and not sure what thoughts you should be having or how to get your brain to believe them? Do you know which you learn towards in times of uncertainty? Do you lean into challenges and uncertainty with a "can do" attitude? Or do you tend to go towards playing it safe? A growth mindset is based on hard work, learning, training, and doggedness. It is always being willing to face a challenge, to try, because they know that the process of doing the challenge, and the process of going through the puzzle, will make them smarter and more capable. When you have a growth mindset, you're always believing that you can get better and stronger and learn more. We can continuously be making ourselves smarter and more capable. 33:52Did you know you have superpowers within your brain?! We all want to be able to use the executive function of our brains. To use the best part of yourself as a human being in a way that will serve whatever goals you want in your life, but you need to work with your brain and understand that it's programmed to be efficient, to expend not a lot of energy and that the brain has to have a great motivation, a great commitment in order to use the energy that is required to think on that higher level. How can we apply all of these in a way that will serve us? Watch as I describe your prefrontal cortex and how to design the life you desire instead of the one you may be settling for. ----- If you heard a ton of great information listening to this episode, I'd love to hear all about it! 40:14I'm so thrilled for you to hear from Liz Wine. Liz's wisdom and recommendations for actions and tools are just what we all need right now. As she mentioned, children are watching what adults do, especially during this global pandemic. Are we engaging in heated conversations? Are we limiting the amount of newsflow into our homes? Liz also discusses various strategies for parents and educators right now. 1. Planning: As she says, "with anxiety about the unknown, work on planning a month at a time, or even just a week at a time. Right now I’ve only filled out my paper planner month at a glance for August, and filling out each week on Sunday night. I’m keeping long-term potential dates in my Google calendar. It’s easier to curb disappointment this way." 2. Calm corner or portable coping skills box. There are various resources. I even have a video on the Lives of Courage Facebook page. 3. Circle of control activity: For a printable, visit. https://www.sparktherapies.com/blog/2020/04/07/circles-of-influence-control-what-not-to-worry-about-free-printable/ Also, think about giving kids two simple choices that are BOTH ones you are willing to live with. Conscious discipline is a great resource if you want to use this time and understand what’s in your control as a caregiver. https://consciousdiscipline.com/covid19/ 4. Kindness doesn’t cost. Look for ways to be kind and give back. This also helps get us out of our egocentric focus. https://kidsforpeaceglobal.org/covid-19/ 5. Play: Play is the language of children, how can you incorporate play? Also consider: Escape rooms—there are lots of resources! https://mamateaches.com/digital-escape-rooms/ Zoom scavenger hunt https://www.craftsonsea.co.uk/scavenger-hunt-zoom/ You can find Liz on Instagram @liz_wine1…
Burnout is the NOT the result of working too much. It's not even about having an unbalanced life. It's caused by the stories you are telling yourself. Your thoughts and emotions you're using to get to work. What if I told you that you could do the exact same amount of work, work the exact same amount of hours and be energized by it. Listen in as we talk about what causes burn out, what stories we tell ourselves about our tiredness and what we can do to avoid burnout. ----- If you heard a ton of great information listening to this episode, I'd love to hear all about it! 37:39My heart is breaking for us all right now. With extraordinary changes to our everyday lives, we are all overwhelmed. I see so many mismanaged brains right now. And it’s not anyone’s fault. Maybe you’ve seen other examples of people unable to adapt to all the changes we’ve been through the past four months or maybe you are experiencing the ups and downs of this emotional rollercoaster. You might be overwhelmed, fed up, or angry. You might find yourself drinking more often, or binging shows on Netflix in order to distract from feeling so out of control. Here’s what I know: to stop the coaster, we have to manage our brains. And to do this, we need to have the right information. When we know how our brains function and understand our brains’ purpose, we are able to see our habitual patterns and change them for good. During a pandemic, during a crisis, and during the good times too, we can create new habits and patterns that serve us better. In this episode, you will learn: What your brain is designed to do. Why our brains tend to lie to us about our safety. What happens in your brain when you experience stress. What occurs when you change your stories about how you manage stress. One thing you can do today to manage your brain. ----- Follow Jessica on Instagram: @livesofcourage If you heard a ton of great information listening to this episode, I'd love to hear all about it! People pleasing is a pattern of behavior in which you do everything to try to get someone to be pleased with you. To like you. To not feel negative emotion about you. But sweet friends, I’m here to say that we can NOT please other people. You can’t control other people’s thoughts or emotions, even if they think you do. Their thoughts create their feelings. And just because they don’t know that their thoughts create their feelings, doesn’t mean you are creating their feelings or have any impact on their feelings. Whatever their brain is telling you, whatever story you’ve created, you don’t cause other people’s emotions. Today's episode is all about identifying when you're trying to please others, and how to review and reframe your thoughts instead. ---------- Follow Jessica on Instagram: @livesofcourage If you heard a ton of great information listening to this episode, I'd love to hear all about it! When you decide to be intentional with what you eat, your relationship with your food AND your own brain will change. This is more than just eating on purpose. When you choose to be intentional about all your choices and sticking to your plan (whatever that may be), you change your relationship with yourself. And we know that when you start to show yourself that you can change, your brain starts believing you. And you are unstoppable. I promise, this isn't about willpower or self-discipline. It's about reprogramming your brain, which you can do! I'd love to hear your feedback from this video and what questions you have. Feel free to email me at hello@jessicastong.com…

I feel like I don’t get enough time to myself. And on the weekends, the things I want to do that make me feel happy and relaxed doesn’t involve the kids. How do I reframe this? . . . . . Most of you will likely have experienced this trap. You start to compare yourself to others - their careers, how well-behaved their kids are, the state of their relationship, how much money they make, you know, all the things. And then the despair sets in. The thoughts that you aren’t good enough, you don’t have what it takes. That you will never be like the other to which you are comparing yourself. Then it’s a trap. You’re stuck in it. You’re comparing and feeling despair and then when you are feeling that despair, you compare some more. You can’t get out of it. When you have thoughts of comparison, you get feelings of despair. And the only way to feel better in this life is to change the way you are thinking. . . . . . What role does fear play in your everyday life? How can you use everyday courage to move toward your goals? Since childhood, we’ve been told that the true definition of courage is one of self-sacrifice and colossal acts of heroism. But I’d like to offer an alternative definition of courage, exemplified in the most classic of Kansas stories, The Wizard of Oz. Despite fear, Dorothy made a commitment to returning home to find her family. Along the way, she made connections to allies who support her to not only survive threats but to find the Emerald City. We bear witness to each character’s flaws and fears but also the process in which they transform their minds to be set free. It is in the act of moving forward with fear that they display courage. Today, I will discuss the definition of everyday courage and why it is crucial to our experience in the world today. Along with an orientation to the Cycle of Courage that I created to help anyone navigate change. The Cycle includes commitment, connection, cognition and change; I will describe how we can use this psychological framework to light our way to our own Emerald City. ..... Welcome to the International Women’s Day episode. We’re going to talk about why equality matters, why we all need to be using our voices, and how to claim your courage and your power. “Change isn’t just about big headline moments, legal victories and international agreements: the way we talk, think, and act every day can create a ripple effect that benefits everyone.” (from www.un.org ) What can we do? -Remember that women (and all people) face biases due to their gender, race, sexuality, disability, and other aspects of their identity. -Intersectionality can be at play in any situation. -We all have biases. Our work is to acknowledge and confront them in our own minds. -Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough— let’s all work to take action. . . . . . 31:51My passion is teaching people how to work with their brains instead of against them. To this end, I am so excited to introduce to you some common cognitive distortions. I describe these as thought errors. Errors our brains make that are so common to each and every one of us. When we get trapped in a cognitive distortion, we experience a negative loop that can have you spiraling further and further into helplessness and despair until it feels like there is no way out. But there is a way out. You must name the thought, name the distortion, to then tame it. 27:57I’m so excited to discuss how we can experience life with our full brain. Today, let's discuss brain integration. Well-being, which Dr. Daniel Siegel describes as health, happiness, and a sense of purpose and meaning, can be achieved through right brain left brain integration. Most of us are familiar with the basics of the remarkable human brain. Between our ears and behind our eyes are the left and right brains, two halves responsible for very different aspects of our experience and personality. Both halves of the brain have a vital role to play, and mental wellbeing requires a balance and integration between the two. We can create more integration through mindfulness, autobiographical exercises, and awareness. . . . . . Shame says something is wrong with me. Shame is an emotion, I should say, that we feel in our bodies. Shame often comes up when things don’t go how we wanted or planned them to go. I think we all have some version of a shame story in our lives. And when we don’t have a managed brain, we often go to this story, with thoughts like “this is all my fault or I should have known better or this is all wrong because there’s something wrong with me and if I were better or more loved by God, then I wouldn’t have made this mistake, and then this terrible thing wouldn’t have happened.” The truth is, we are going to make mistakes in our life. We will feel shame and want to blame. But I want to invite you to a new experience of making mistakes. What does self-care look like in your life? I hear so many things. "Netflixing," buying things, reading, exercising, yoga, chocolate, wine, cutting out toxins: people or products, all the things. It’s often surface level actions. I’m not here to tell you how to do it. What I’m here to tell you is how self care should make you feel. I want to define self-care as how you take care of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Self-care involves loving yourself enough to engage in consistent, ongoing and it's PROACTIVE. It’s important to note that these are things that may or may not be enjoyable in the short-term, but create wellbeing in the long-term. Let’s explore this definition today! . . . . . Think about your relationship with time... Do you feel like you have control over it? Do you feel like you get to decide how you invest it now? What if I told you you could change how you think about time? Your brain would probably want to scream or shut down. I first heard that I could choose how I saw time and choose how I spent my time when I was in coaching school and was raising Henry by myself in a foreign country. I was super annoyed that someone would have the audacity to suggest that being busy was a thought. I mean, come on, look at me. I’m doing #allthethings! But I'm here to tell you, you get to decide. We get to determine how we think about time. And when you change your thoughts about it, this will change your experience about time. Listen as we go through the TEAR process on our thoughts about time and then how to actually get stuff done!…
Emotions are powerful. They drive us to action. Their influence over us is amazing and when we understand that, then we can leverage that knowledge to really make the changes we want to in ourselves and in our lives. We grow in life. Events happen, and we learn things along the way. And we are all growing and evolving. But there’s the growth that will happen if you just operate at the effect of your life, which is not a bad thing, but there’s also the ability and the potential to expedite or increase your growth, which will increase your contribution and your experience in this life. And that’s what understanding emotions does. The more I work to understand emotions, the more I’m willing to examine them and understand the role they play in my life, the more I can use this knowledge to change my life and the lives of my clients. Today, I want to teach you how to get clarity around your own experience of your emotions today.…
Have you ever felt... You might be so overwhelmed with all that is on your to-do list. You hustle harder, do all the things, and that doesn’t seem to be changing the situation. You might just want to know how to make it work. You want to think there will be a day when you don’t have to struggle to grow your business or ask for a raise or put off savings or anything to get ahead. You might be exhausted and have nothing left to give your family at the end of the day. You end up yelling at your loved ones and feeling terrible in the process. You probably go to bed only to repeat the process the next day. You often feel like you put others before yourself. Always. Your kids, your spouse, your job, your employer, your employees. You just want to measure up at some point. Friends, you don't have to feel that way. There is another way.. In the Courageous Life Society, I will teach you how to: -Change your cognition by understanding how your thoughts, emotions, actions and results are all connected. -Commit to the results you want in your life. -Connect to yourself, your social world and to God. -Change how your brain responds to change and fear, once and for all. I help women escape fear, overwhelm and chaos and courageously take control of their lives so that they achieve lasting success. We are overwhelmed right now. With all that is going on, we need to take control of our thoughts now more than ever. As a cognitive behavioral coach, I am so excited to help you learn how to do this! A few questions: Do you often find yourself trapped in anxious, negative, and unproductive thinking? Do you lose valuable time, focus, and energy because of overthinking and worry? Do you ever feel frustrated and confused about how to stop negative and compulsive thinking? Have you experienced times of high stress, agitation, anxiety, and even depression as a result of mental overwhelm? Do you feel so busy, overwhelmed, and stressed that you’ve lost touch with who you really are? Do you simply desire a more centered, calm, and peaceful life? I want to help you to learn to manage and understand your thoughts AND change your priorities so they don’t rule your life. If you desire to have a simplified, calm mental life—and to reclaim some of the time and emotional energy you give up to overthinking and anxiety—then you’ve come to the right place. You can change your thoughts and have more “space” in your mind to enjoy inner peace and happiness. Training your mind is the mental equivalent of tidying your house. It’s a habit you must repeat daily in order to stay on top of it. You can have the clarity to prioritize what’s most important in your life, what no longer serves your goals, and how you want to live on a daily basis. Causes of Mental Clutter 1. Daily Stress - Daily Overload. 2. Too Many Things - Everything seems important and urgent. Where in your life do you feel driven by a nervous, frantic energy? 3. Negativity Bias - We have negativity bias in our brains. our tendency to react to negative stimuli more intensely than positive. Negative stimuli produce more neural activity than do equally intense (e.g., loud, bright) positive ones. They are also perceived more easily and quickly. 22:12Welcome to Episode 40: Gratitude in the Midst of the Holiday Hustle. Here's the deal, for some of us, the holidays can bring stress. So how do we stay mindful, focus on family and friends, and not lose our minds? How do we not let the hustle and bustle overwhelm us? As a cognitive coach, I will say (over and over again) that our experiences comes back to our mindset. We get to chose our thoughts - and we get to chose how we will respond to this holiday stress. One powerful way to make sure you truly experience the warmth and reason for the season is to slow down and remember to acknowledge all the things and people in your life that make you feel grateful. The holidays are a time to focus on the most important aspects of life. We take time out to be with family, share gifts, and give to those less fortunate. Whether intentional or not, feelings of gratitude are often woven throughout these annual traditions, and can impact our physical and mental health in a positive way. Here are 5 ways to practice gratitude during the hustle: 1. Be Mindful 2. Pitch In 3. Volunteer (Pay It Forward) 4. Compliment Others 5. Count Your Blessings “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.” - Meister Eckhart…
Episode 38: What thoughts are helping you achieve success? We’re discussing how our mindset matters. Yes, even to us as adults. Here’s the thing: You Can Change Your Brain, Your Mindset, and Your Thoughts to Change YOUR LIFE. Believe that you CAN change your thoughts and behaviors. When you practice a new skill over and over again or you increase your exposure to new experiences repeatedly, your brain grows stronger in those related areas. So, when you repeat a behavior, an action, an emotion, or a thought over and over again, the pathway responsible for sending the signal becomes stronger and it becomes easier and easier. This is how skills are developed and habits are formed. It’s also how emotional triggers are created and negative patterns are formed. Whether the outcome is good or bad, whatever that you do repeatedly changes the physical workings of the neural connections in your brain. {And what you focus on, you get more of - as I seem to always say.} You can literally rewire your brain through new thoughts to change your outcomes. As discussed in this episode, here are a few new thoughts to try: 1. I am capable of anything and everything. 2. Greatness is a daily choice. 3. I have so much to offer the world. So join us, change your thoughts and grow your brain today!…

15:56Taking time to uncover our limiting beliefs will allow us to live more fulfilling lives with confidence and purpose. Limiting beliefs are thoughts that hold us back in any area of our lives. These limiting beliefs speak to you every day; they are better known as your gremlins, your inner critic , the voice of the self-saboteur. Your inner voice is that nagging narrator in your head that just never shuts up. These thoughts place limitations on our ability to act or achieve our goals. We can reprogram our brain to identify our inner critic and tune in to what it is saying, to turn down the volume and stop the negative inner voice of our critic and to replace the thoughts that will serve us and help us reach our goals. Addressing this inner critic takes courage. But until we do, we will never have the courage to grow and become who we are truly meant to be. You can do this...you are worth it.…
Welcome to Episode 37: Working Memory and You. Do you ever thinking to yourself - Why Can’t I Remember Anything? And What Was I Just Doing? Here’s the deal: some of us are better than remembering things more than others. Working memory is one of the executive functions - it's like your brain's temporary sticky note. It’s the ability to hold and manipulate information in mind, over brief intervals. Your working memory is designed to help you remember things that are important to you in the present moment, but not 20 years from now. You use your working memory hundreds of times every day. When you mentally prepare a list before going to the store or think about what you want to accomplish at work, you are using your working memory. So what can you do if you struggle with working memory? (Or if someone close to you might struggle.) I have 8 recommendations for you in this episode!…

26:53Welcome to Episode 32: Executive Function Strategies for Kids. Join us for a overview of executive skills and how we can support these skills in children and teens. It's important to note that the development of a brain’s executive skills depends upon your age, your genetics and your experiences - and these are skills we can teach and learn. Think about it: Is procrastinating over homework and projects a constant never ending battle? Is it concerning that your child can focus for hours and hours on a video game but can’t sit still for five homework problems? Do you find your child (or you!) can’t seem to keep track of what you need to do or often lose items? Are your child's binder, backpack, and possibly his bedroom, the entry points to the black holes of the universe? Do you have to remind your child over and over and over and over again to do things? Kids aren't just lazy or lack common sense; we now have the tools to be able to support them in developing the 11 executive skills which include: Cognitive skills - Working Memory, Planning Prioritization, Organization, Time Management, Metacognition Behavioral Skills - Response Inhibition, Emotional Control, Flexibility, Sustained Attention, Task Initiation, Goal-Directed Persistence…

Join us as we chat about how to use coaching with your own kids to help them with emotional regulation. Because we have a lot of transitions coming up with the new school year and its new schedules, new teachers, new routines. As I see it, emotional regulation is the ability to understand feelings and manage them. This is important for lifelong health and wellness. So how do we do this? Well, it's a lifetime of work, But we are all doing learning. As a family. Together. We are all working on ourselves and learning how to communicate our feelings, our needs and who we are. Emotional Regulations includes: 1. Noticing your child's emotions and helping them understand their own brain states 2. Helping them learn to label their emotions and feel their emotions (but not act on them) 3. Teaching them about connection and conflict resolution through connection The most important piece to this work is connection. Your homework this week (and month) is to spend 5-10 minutes with each child. One on one time. Connection will help you weather any storm and is the game changer for families. Please trust me.…

In today episode, I discuss how to use the Cycle of Courage, the four step process that I created to make a change of any kind. Especially today, we are chronically stressed. Here’s the truth, no matter what happens to us or how stressed we are, we get a choice. We get to choose our health and happiness. We get to choose peace. Even when we’re scared. Especially when we are scared. We get to choose courage. We are bigger than our fears we are bigger than what holds us back.…

22:03Join us as we discuss how educational therapy and coaching can help all kids thrive through educational, social, and behavioral support. Do you have a child seems unmotivated? Or doesn't recognize their own strengths and talents? Does your child have trouble making healthy decisions? Is your child unsure of what they should do or even how to set long-term goals? Educational therapy interventions include executive functioning coaching, wrap-around organizational support, emotional resiliency programming, and case management services which include personal development, family relationship building, and communication with school faculty and staff and other related professionals. In the process, therapists identify and asses student’s learning needs and tailor a complete plan to address and support healthy development. This work helps build a child’s theory of mind, develop and utilize strengths-based approach to harness an individual's strengths to overcome challenges, enhance their understanding of how their brain impacts their behavior and development, and strengthen any processing gaps. Educational Therapy is often used to support students with learning differences but can be utilized to address most behavioral issues that result from challenging academic, social, or intellectual contributions. If you want more information, or about how to get started with our Courageous Kids Program, please head to our website at https://livesofcourage.lpages.co/educational-therapy-info/ . Please feel to also also email us at hello@jessicastong.com with any questions! Thanks for listening!…
