Motivation is good, right? It's important for our clients and patients to be motivated to attain their goals, correct? Well, yes and no. Motivation is like money, or oxygen - not having enough is a big deal, but having more than you need can distract you from more meaningful pursuits. In this conversation with Glenn Livingston, PhD, of Never Binge Again, Howard explores the uses - and misuses - of motivation. And we talk about how to work with clients to increase their capacity to act while not feeling motivation. And why this is the Holy Grail of habit change.…

Christin Bummer used to lavish care on dogs via her Canine Kingdom business. Now she coaches humans to give similar consideration to themselves. She went plant-based in 2011, just before Forks Over Knives was released. In fact, she turned vegan overnight, which made me wonder how she relates to clients who don't keep their promises to themselves as she has been able to. But then Christin revealed her own secret behavior during pregnancy, adding Starbucks lattes, then non-vegan scones, then Panera chocolate chip cookies, even while she was an ethical vegan activist. She snapped out of it - again, overnight - after naming it a processed food addiction (under the guidance of Chef AJ and John Pierre) and committing to abstinence of sugar, flour, and alcohol. Coach Approach As a coach, Christin's philosophy is to meet people where they are, rather than impose a model of addiction on them. She's a big fan of the power of group coaching, and values the dynamics that a community of support can bring to the individual. She credits her own self-development work for her ability to stay focused, curious, intuitive, and helpful to her clients. At the end of the day, the details of the food plan or workout plan are trivialities compared to the mindset and the deep internal dialogs that determine our actions. For example, many women in caretaker roles abandon their own needs due to a belief that "I don't matter." Eventually, as those around them demand more and more of their time and attention, they become resentful. Operating from a different belief becomes far more important than blocking off 30 minutes of yoga in their calendar. We spent some time unpacking the practice of Intuitive Coaching, which involves trusting oneself and the client, and engaging in deep, curiosity-driven listening. Coaches will find this section particularly useful. You can find Christin at TheForeverDiet.org . She's got a new book, Baby Got Back in Her Pants , which you can purchase from her website or on Amazon.…

Sometimes our clients come to us with urgent situations - often upsetting - that they want to spend the session on. It's easy to get sucked into these requests, but it's almost always a mistake. In this episode, Howard explains why urgent issues are usually a dead end, and how to counter the request in a respectful and genuinely valuable way The quote from Danny Kahneman comes from his 2011 book, Thinking, Fast and Slow : "Nothing in life is as important as you think it is when you are thinking about it." This episode, like every HCP podcast, is sponsored by http://WellStartCoach.com . If you're a health coach wanting a more reliable process for helping clients change; if you're a lifestyle medicine practitioner needing to generate more "compliance" with diet and lifestyle prescriptions, or you'd like to help the people in your life overcome negative health habits and live their best lives, check out the WellStart Health Coaching Academy.…

Our clients come to us for relief from bad things: symptoms, compulsions, behaviors, sensations, emotions, and so on. One of our main jobs as coaches is to help them shift to a positive orientation - seeking some satisfaction from life, rather than fleeing or preventing negatives. In this episode, Howard talks about the difference between a relief- and a satisfaction-orientation, and how to skillfully shift our clients from relief to satisfaction while honoring their needs and perspectives.…

When we set external and future goals ("lose 20 pounds in 3 months"), they can function as a GPS for our daily actions and decisions. But what happens when we either reach those goals ("I guess I'm done - let's celebrate with some junk food") or decide they aren't that motivating compared to the urge to binge in the moment? Lynette Neal is a WellStart Health participant, as well as a private coaching client of Howard's. As their work has progressed, Lynette and Howard have been exploring approaches and exercises developed by Steven C Hayes and colleagues as part of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In this conversation, Lynette shares her journey, and how incorporating ACT has allowed her to grow and achieve in areas seemingly unrelated to nutrition, exercise, and physical health.…

Kate Galli is a health coach and trainer in Sydney, Australia, as well as a health and animal rights activist. Howard spoke with her about the three biggest obstacles to going plant-based that she encounters in her clients, and how she deals with them. Obstacle #1: they don't want to stand out and are hesitant to inconvenience others. While ethical vegans aren't going to "slip up" - their beliefs are "locked and loaded" - those going plant-based for health reasons often see room for leeway, which can become a slippery slope. Her strategies include connecting her clients to their values and beliefs, reminding them of the opportunity to be a trailblazer and help others, and noticing how they navigate their standards and actions in domains in which they're currently successful. Obstacle #2: they're confused because of all the online propaganda from big meat and dairy Instead of arguing with cold hard facts and animal rights passion. Kate now leads with deliciousness, presenting food and recipes that bypass the rational mind completely. This is more effective than sharing documentaries or websites or books. And this relates directly to... Obstacle #3: they think that vegan food is boring and restrictive When people think about "sacrificing" what they love, it's hard to imagine they can stick with it for long. Again, Kate shares the yumminess, using recipes her mother has veganized, to demonstrate that eating plant-based is much more varied and satisfying than the standard Western diet. You can find out more about Kate's practice at https://strongbodygreenplanet.com/ And check our her Healthification podcast wherever you listen to this one.…

Is it better for our clients to stop doing things (eating Oreos, for example), or to start doing things (eating salad or going for walks)? When should we encourage inhibition of bad habits, or addition of good ones? Can we combine the two strategies? And how to we operationalize these ideas in coaching sessions? And - most importantly - what can Hoots the Owl teach us about achieving our goals? This episode, like every HCP podcast, is sponsored by http://WellStartCoach.com. If you’re a health coach wanting a more reliable process for helping clients change; if you’re a lifestyle medicine practitioner needing to generate more “compliance” with diet and lifestyle prescriptions, or you’d like to help the people in your life overcome negative health habits and live their best lives, check out the WellStart Health Coaching Academy. In today’s episode of the Health Coaches Podcast, Howard talks with Dr Glenn Livingston of Never Binge Again. When we get our health behaviors under control, even when strong emotions tempt us to "misbehave," we have a great opportunity to face those feelings head-on. And we can often discover liberation, ease, and pleasure in our ability to withstand emotions and sensations that we've been avoiding our whole lives. ============================================= This episode, like every HCP podcast, is sponsored by http://WellStartCoach.com. You can use the concept of "non-negotiable" habits and standards with two different types of clients. The most powerful case is with "slippery" clients who haven't yet learned to keep their word to themselves. In this solo episode, Howard discusses how to invite clients to make certain things non-negotiable, as well as how to deal with their "edge case" reasons why not. Plus a fun look at the etymology of "non-negotiable." ============================================= This episode, like every HCP podcast, is sponsored by http://WellStartCoach.com. Today we talk about lying. Outright lies, white lies, lies of omission, misrepresentations, and not keeping our word to ourselves and others. What's the connection between lying and not achieving our health goals? How is it even possible to "lie to yourself"? How can we as coaches support our clients in facing and naming reality with clarity and courage? And what's the connection between our own impulses toward dishonesty and our unwillingness to call our clients on their bullshit? ============================================= This episode, like every HCP podcast, is sponsored by http://WellStartCoach.com. Robby Barbaro co-runs Mastering Diabetes, a group program that guides type 1 and type 2 diabetes to overhaul their diets, get fit, and either reverse or halt disease progression. We spoke about the double-edged sword of frequent measurement of blood glucose, and how coaching can benefit from the clarity and motivation that comes from seeing objective numbers change as a result of immediate actions. We talked about the secret sauce of the Mastering Diabetes coaching approach - relentless and unconditional empathy and support - and how this feature of group and 1-on-1 interactions increases the odds that clients will stay engaged when they struggle. We also discussed Robby's conviction that clients need, not just thinking partners, but leaders, and enjoy and benefit from being told what to do and how to do it - in some domains. If your coaching practice involves teaching in addition to straight-up "help the client achieve their agenda," this will be a useful and challenging episode.…

Co-host Kevin Davis comes clean about his extra five quarantine pounds, and his eating habits that have allowed those pounds to accumulate. Co-host Howard puts on his coaching hat for a demo of a full-length process. Then we debrief the session, highlighting some things that worked, some strategies that might have flown under your radar, and some options for different coaching moves that Howard might have tried.…

Sometimes a client will show up to a coaching session with no problems. Everything's going great. They're succeeding effortlessly. They've got nothing to brainstorm or debrief. Yikes! What do I do now? We're so trained to focus on problems, we can get thrown for a loop when our clients actually succeed. In this episode, we talk about the fact that this scenario is a good thing, not a problem. And offer some options for deepening the work when there's no "immediate problem" to solve. ============================================= This episode, like every HCP podcast, is sponsored by http://WellStartCoach.com. Andrew Taylor has a unique coaching "origin story." An obese, diabetic food addict, he decided to quit eating the way an alcoholic gives up booze and a cocaine addict abstains from blow. Since eliminating food entirely wasn't possible, he decided to consume nothing but potatoes for an entire year. His YouTube-chronicled journey of weight loss, regained health, and renewed self-esteem made him famous in a way, to the point where lots of other people wanted his guidance in changing their diets and getting healthy. As a school teacher working with at-risk youth, Andrew (increasingly known by his new nickname, "Spudfit," had a lot of experience with people with impulse control deficits and a lot of hopelessness. He applied his existing skill set to his health clients, and refined various strategies to help them "prime their minds" every morning, avoid predictable pitfalls, and treat their recovery as a science experiment. The heart of his method is a type of questioning that challenges his clients to revise their perception of reality. The space created by uncertainty about old ways of thinking allows for new actions, which further challenge the client's old assumptions. As Andrew says, everyone wants to improve. Even those who have come close to "giving up" will respond positively to positive results. You can find Andrew at http://spudfit.com. ============================================= This episode, like every HCP podcast, is sponsored by http://WellStartCoach.com.
