57:15There are many aspects that are to be considered when exploring foundations of addiction, specifically motivations in decision-making such as emotional arousal, anticipation or even reward processing. As a society, we seem to have conceptualized addictions as caused by moral failures, however this is untrue. Addictions manifest due to differences in our neuroanatomy. This finding has been used to classify an array of conditions and diagnoses as well as help us gain a better understanding of the biological underpinning of the phenomenon known as addiction. Dr. Balodis, professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, joins us to expand our knowledge on the concept of decision making. Her diverse knowledge on gambling, cannabis use, binge earning, and crack cocaine provide insights on addictions as a whole and various modes of motivation.…

18:39For decades, the music industry has been associated with drugs, alcohol, and rock n’ roll. The glamorization of the addiction in the music industry has left out important conversations around rising overdose rates and the opioid crisis. The lives of famous musicians Amy Winehouse, Prince, and Mac Miller were tragically lost due to alcohol and/or drug implications. However, the music industry has the power to create change internally by creating a culture of awareness. In this episode, we speak with Ace Piva, a certified addictions counsellor and founder of Over the Bridge . We discuss bringing awareness to the culture of substance use, the importance of music in harm reduction efforts, and the current overdose prevention awareness efforts within the music industry.…

Sandra Ka Hon Chu, the Director of Research and Advocacy at the Canadian HIV/AIDS legal network and a lawyer by profession discusses the challenges faced while advocating for harm reduction in prisons and the legal tools that advocates can use to amplify their voices.…
