Battle after bloody battle would be required, often with Japanese losses in men being ten times that of the Americans since surrender was not an option in the Bushido warrior code. We will consider the horrible but necessary use of the ‘ultimate weapon’: two atomic bombs that forced Japan to surrender in September of 1945. Text us your questions! The Battle of Britain lasted from July of 1940 until May of 1941. Hitler threw wave after wave of bombers against England but the RAF kept fighting and winning. Finally even Hitler had to admit that no invasion of German troops was going to succeed. Instead, he turned against his semi-ally to that point, the USSR, and began invading Russia in July of 1941. After Japan attacked the U.S. in December, we built up our war-making production and prepared our own plans for beating the Germans. From North Africa to D-Day, the U.S. never let up. The British may have had the world’s greatest navy, but the Germans had almost won the first World War by employing their submarines (U-Boats), so not surprisingly they used this tactic again in the Atlantic. Britain needed supplies and they could only come over the water and largely from the United States. With FDR’s behind-the-scenes help using the U.S. Navy, the Brits fought to keep the shipping lanes open and safe. Text us your questions! Hitler’s generals kept telling him he was going too far as he made bold moves in 1936 and 1938 into German-affiliated regions. But no shots were fired and Hitler was proven right time after time. When he prepared to invade Poland in September of 1939, he had no real reason to think that now, after all he’d done, the Brits and the French would militarily act. He was wrong. Prime Minister Chamberlain warned him that war would be declared if Germany did not leave Poland by September 3, two days after the invasion. Hitler ignored the warning and war was indeed declared by the PM and King George VI.
