Dear Mom & Dad –

It’s raining – a good time to do a little writing. I’m sorry it’s been over a week since I last wrote, but I have been busy.

For the last 4 or 5 days I’ve been over my chin in legal papers. Boy, did I get stuck with a dilly of a job! Have you ever heard of a T.J.A., (Trial Judge Advocate)? No? Well it’s the army’s way of saying “prosecuting attorney.” And I was appointed T.J.A. for three AWOL court martials. I had to investigate all witnesses, set up my case, take care of all arrangements for the trial, & then try the case. Gosh I talked myself hoarse during the three trials – we had all three at once. The Court found all three guilty and put them in cold storage for 4 mos, fining them 2/3 of their pay for 6 mos. I guess I must have done OK, but I feel like a heel. I’ve now acquired the nickname of “Judge.” This job usually falls on Capt. Bolton who is a lawyer, but he was at the front at the time, so I got stuck. There are two more cases coming up – hope I can dodge ‘em somehow – maybe Bolton will be back by then.

Today I’ve been busy writing up recommendations for the Bronze Star for a couple of my boys. They have to be written-up just so or they’ll bounce right back. Can’t figure out how I manage to catch all this paper work.

Say, I forgot to mention that Denny was the Defense Council – or Attny. for the accused. Yup, it was St. Paul vs Mpls., & he had me hoppin’ too.

I was with Denny when we each got letters from home telling of the Alquist & Healy get together in St. Paul. We had a good time comparing notes. I’m glad you enjoy their company – maybe after the war we’ll have some good times on visits.

I had a nice letter from Elaine – she certainly has changed hasn’t she? It’s swell the way she gets along with Dot & Arlo there in N.Y. – she sounds so completely happy. Hope she stays there – it’ll be lots of fun to go & visit them after the war.

Yesterday we heard the news of the President’s death – it was quite a blow. I’m afraid that job is just too much for the meek Truman – can’t picture him meeting in Frisco with Stalin, Churchill, etc. Oh well, Stasson’ll be there to take over. I guess Congress will be running the nation during this administration. Maybe he’ll surprise us and do OK – hope so.

The news in Europe does look promising. Another month will see the end for sure. But as you say there is only one war as far as we’re concerned and it’s right here in my lap. Lets hope they learn how to say “Uncle” soon.

Say, Mom, I heard your song – My Dreams Are Getting Better. Yes, I agree, it’s very catchy. There must be scads of new songs I’ve never even heard.

Did I tell you I got the fruit cakes & Rye Krisp – the package was in swell condition – thanks a lot. Tony’s got some sardines, so we’ll have a real snack one night soon.

Enclosed are two money orders for $100 and $50. Would appreciate your checking up on my insurance & paying it if due. Thanks.

So long. I’ll try to make the next one sooner. I’m feeling swell – hope you at home are too.

Love, Dorance
