Sammy "The Bull" Gravano is a notorious former underboss of the Gambino crime family, one of the most powerful and influential Mafia organizations in New York. Born Salvatore Gravano on March 12, 1945, in Brooklyn, New York, he became involved in organized crime at a young age, rising through the ranks due to his ruthless efficiency and loyalty.
Gravano is perhaps best known for his role in helping bring down one of the most feared Mafia bosses in history, John Gotti. As Gotti's underboss, Gravano was involved in numerous criminal activities, including murder, extortion, and drug trafficking. However, in a stunning turn of events, Gravano decided to cooperate with federal authorities in 1991. His testimony was pivotal in convicting Gotti and many other mob figures, earning Gravano the nickname "The Bull" for his fearlessness and tenacity.
In exchange for his cooperation, Gravano received a reduced sentence and entered the Witness Protection Program. However, he eventually left the program and was later involved in further criminal activities, including running an ecstasy drug ring in Arizona, for which he was arrested and sentenced to prison in 2002.
Gravano's decision to turn informant made him one of the most infamous figures in Mafia history, and his life story has been widely covered in books, documentaries, and interviews. His betrayal of the Mafia's code of silence, or "Omertà," was seen as a major blow to the organization and highlighted the vulnerabilities within the mob's hierarchy.
