E51: Interview with Dr Paula Smith
Paula is an author, researcher, master trainer keynote speaker, and leadership coach in all things powerful presenting and leadership communication and the CEO of the Global Institute of Training and Presenting. In this episode, we talk about how you can use presenting to grow your business and/or your brand.
Paula discusses how we can inspire people through sharing stories, appealing to emotions in addition to sharing facts. She shares with us how creating curiosity in our presenting results in attention and engagement from our audience through the dopamine released in the brain which assists us in achieving our end result of inspiring them to change their behaviour or belief systems.
Paula shares a heap of gold nuggets in this episode including (but definitely not limited to) how powerful and influential presenters and leaders are made not born and that by looking into your past to identify the belief systems that stop you from powerful presenting can allow you to step into that space confidently. She also shared with us the 3 key elements needed for influencing that we can include in our presenting strategies which are: Ethos (setting yourself up as a knowledge expert with authority, credibility and trust), Pathos (connecting to the audience with emotion and the sharing of stories) and Logos (supporting presentations with logic, data and facts).

Dr Paula Smith admits she is just a little bit obsessed with impactful training and presenting. Paula is a researcher, master trainer and leadership coach in all things powerful presenting and leadership communication. Paula has been running her own training and speaking business for nearly 4 decades.
She says she loves the relationships she has with my clients. It’s more like a partnership. Together they explore, develop, train, inspire and implement strategies to help their key people build better relationships and communicate with more influence and impact.
Some days she is speaking at conferences, most days she is running master classes, and other days she is meeting and working deeply with her business and executive clients through private coaching or powerful master minds.
Her master’s and PhD work was in Presentation Intelligence ® and loves nothing more than sharing her insights with other professionals.
She says she doesn’t like fluff either – everything she presents is either evidence-based or lived experience (most is both).
