With staffing at an all-time low among fire departments and other organizations across the continent, strategies for recruitment and retention have gained the spotlight. It seems organizations are more interested in scooping the proverbial water out of the boat rather than stopping the leak; and even then, some people are choosing to ignore the problem altogether. What those people don’t realize is that they are sitting in the same boat.

One of the ways we can address this issue that’s becoming more prominent is to assess our cultures. I will speak to the fire service culture specifically, but ultimately, the principles can be applied to a multitude of different organization structures.

In today’s episode, I will talk about what we can do when it comes to having an effect on our culture that can have a huge impact on recruitment and retention.
