SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE (1987)
Manage episode 430820958 series 2983062
After 1984’s SUPERGIRL failed, the Salkinds were ready to get out of the Superman movie business and sold the rights to Golan & Globus of Cannon Films. Eager to get to work on the sequel, the producers went to star Christopher Reeve with an offer he couldn’t refuse; agree to star in Superman IV and they’ll produce any other movie he wants to make before making the sequel. He would also have story approval, and Reeve wanted to focus on a topic that he felt was of the utmost importance at the time: nuclear disarmament.
So, while Reeve when to work on the Oscar nominated Street Smart, the Cannon producers brought back stars Gene Hackman and Margot Kidder; they found a screenwriter, a director, and made a deal with Warner Bros to make the next Superman movie for a budget of $40 million… but when SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE was released in theaters in the summer of 1987, it became obvious that only $14 million of that budget was ultimately used for production of the film.
