There are a number of stories and parables in the Puranas about Lord Ganesha. The Ganesha Purana and the Mudgala Purana are the core scriptures regarding Ganesha. They consider Ganesha as the Supreme Being, the one Almighty God. The Mudgala Purana indicates eight incarnations of Ganesha like the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. These incarnations are Vakratunda, Ekadanta, Mahodara, Gajavaktra, Lambodara, Vikata, Vignaraja and Dhumravarna. These incarnations are to subjugate the evil tendencies in the form of the demons, namely Maatsaryāsura (jealousy), Madāsura (arrogance), Mohāsura (delusion), Lobhāsura (greed), Krodhāsura (anger), Kāmāsura (lust), Mamāsura (possessiveness) and Ahamkarasura (attachment).

The Ekadanta Stotram is from the second canto of Mudgala Purana relating to the subjugation of Madasura.

It is said that Madasura was created by Sage Chyavana. Madasura propitiated Shukracharya who initiated him with a Shakti mantra. He performed intense penance by chanting the mantra. Soon he attained the power to rule the universe. With huge power in his disposal he became corrupt and evil. His activities caused immense difficulties to all living beings. The Devas and the Rishis approached Sanatkumara to find a way to defeat Madasura. Sanatkumara asked them to pray to Ganesha in Ekadanta form. Ganesha answered their prayers and appeared before Madasura as Ekadanta. On seeing him, Madasura did not fight and completely surrendered before Ekadanta.

After the subjugation of Madasura, the Devas and the Rishis praise Lord Ganesha as in this Ekadanta stotram.
