Today we discuss daylight saving time and its effects on insurance premiums, car crashes, wildlife collisions, and hospital visits. No one knows the real reason for daylight savings time. It has no proven benefits for farmers, energy savings, etc. Changing the clocks by one hour for daylight savings causes a 7.5% increase in fatal car crashes for the first week after the change. Then there is a 16% increase in deer-vehicle collisions the week after the change, and a 10% increase the following week. More claims lead to higher premiums as we all know. Hospital visits for heart attacks increase 24% the week after the change while, get this, robberies decrease 7% after the change, perhaps because criminals are occupied with car crashes and medical issues. In total, daylight saving is correlated with more fatalities, crashes, insurance claims, and health issues.
