In 2 Samuel 14:5-14, we find a powerful message conveyed through the story of the wise woman of Tekoa, who persuades King David to reconcile with his estranged son Absalom. The essence of her message can be distilled into the principle of treating oneself with the same kindness and compassion that one extends to others.

The woman of Tekoa appeals to David's sense of justice and mercy, urging him to consider the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation within his own family. She highlights the inconsistency in David's behavior by asking why he does not show the same grace to his own son that he would show to a stranger in need.

Similarly, in our lives, we often extend empathy, forgiveness, and care to others while neglecting ourselves. This passage encourages us to reflect on how we treat ourselves. Just as we are quick to offer understanding and kindness to friends, family, or even strangers, we should also practice self-compassion and self-care.

Being good to yourself means acknowledging your worth and treating yourself with the same gentleness and understanding that you would offer to others. It involves forgiving yourself for mistakes, nurturing your well-being, and recognizing your own needs for rest, growth, and healing.

By internalizing the lesson from 2 Samuel 14:5-14, we are reminded that true compassion starts within. When we learn to be good to ourselves, we not only enhance our own well-being but also cultivate a deeper capacity to extend genuine care and empathy to those around us.
