Meta Pushes Back: OSI's Open Source AI Definition Faces Resistance
Manage episode 447835422 series 3605659
The Open Source Initiative (OSI) recently unveiled version 1.0 of its Open Source AI Definition (OSAID), a milestone aiming to set a standard for open-source AI. Developed through years of collaboration with tech industry leaders, academia, and regulatory voices, the OSAID defines open AI models as those fully transparent in design, allowing users to understand, modify, and build on them. While big tech companies like Meta and Stability AI tout their models as "open," they often fall short of OSAID’s criteria by withholding key data or imposing usage restrictions. This definition seeks to clarify open AI’s parameters, but concerns remain over licensing, IP, and compliance as companies balance openness with legal and competitive challenges.
