If a friend asks if she can swing by on short notice, do you spend the short window of time that you have before she arrives cramming papers in the kitchen cabinets, panic vacuuming, yelling at your kids to clean up their piles of stuff? Then, when your friend walks in the door, do you apologize for your home?

What if I told you that people don’t come to your home to critique the laundry pile, the dirty dishes, or the undusted baseboards . . . they came to visit with YOU? What if being truly hospitable (not clean, not perfect, not Instagram-worthy) but hospitable was the antidote to home apologies?

In today’s episode, I’m sitting down with Amanda Weeder.

Amanda is the creator of Clare and Colette Home. She came on the podcast last summer in “A Letter to the Women Feeling Overwhelmed by Home Decorating,” which hands down is the most commented episode of the Letters to Women Podcast. I’ve talked to so many of you about the wisdom Amanda shared with me last year and I’m beyond excited to welcome her back for a conversation on hospitality - which is something that we all get some amazing opportunities to both give and receive in the upcoming holiday season.

If you welcome people into your home with an apology for the mess, this letter is for you.

Topics we talked about in this episode:

  • What Amanda calls “Dignity of Home” and how it impacts hospitality
  • The advice Amanda would give you when it comes to preparing our homes to receive guests well
  • What does hospitality look like during the event itself
  • How to receive hospitality this holiday season
  • The hospitality and friendship Amanda has received in her life
  • The tip she’d give the woman who’s listening who wants to take the next friendship step and invite someone over
  • Growing in hospitality to our family
  • Amanda’s tips for a simple Advent
