Dan Pashman is a two-time James Beard Award nominee, he is the host of The Sporkful podcast, he is the author of Eat More Better, and he has a series on the Cooking Channel called You’re Eating it Wrong. He has been a guest on a number of food-related television programs, and it all started with a podcast in his basement. He joins Like, Bite & Share to reflect on his start as a podcast pioneer to his current status as a recognized authority and food eating expert.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Like Bite & Share is a podcast about marketing in the food business. Each episode includes an insightful interview with food marketing professionals.

SHOW NOTES

Key Takeaways:

  • Don’t be shy about asking for favors when starting your podcast. If you have contacts that will make good guests, ask them, and reciprocate the favor if you can. For guests you don’t have a relationship, be persistent but be polite and don’t be annoying.
  • You can make money podcasting by selling ads, by offering merchandise, and by selling access to old episodes that you don’t make readily available online.
  • Marketing to people who already listen to podcasts is probably more effective than marketing to the general public because there is still a large portion of the population that doesn’t listen to podcasts yet.
  • Preparation is important, but being over prepared and over-researched for an interview can take you out of the moment and make you too anxious during the show.
  • Having projects outside of your podcast will help legitimize you as a media entity. Writing a book with an established publisher makes you look like a real player.
  • Quality over quantity: Pick 10 people you want to help you and reach out to them personally. Mass emails are white noise.
