Podcast #15: Anvil After Anvil!
Manage episode 156092321 series 1176602
The 2008 documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil turned a has-been Canadian metal band and the middle-aged headbangers at its core, motormouth guitarist Steve “Lips” Kudlow and stoic drummer Robb Reiner, into hard rock folk heroes, persevering through Spinal Tap-ish indignities and heartbreaking obstacles in pursuit of their boyhood dreams of musical glory.
Two years on Anvil are still riding the wave launched by the movie, conceived and directed by screenwriter Sacha Gervasi (The Terminal, the new Henry’s Crime), who roadied for the band during their early ‘80s near-heyday. Following a summer tour that went considerably better than the disastrous European jaunt depicted in the film, they’re now at work on their 14th album, Juggernaut of Justice. (Fans of the film know Anvil is all about the alliteration.)
Just before the band went back into the studio a few weeks ago, MFW managed to grab some phone time with a now very busy Lips Kudlow to talk about the joys and occasional pitfalls of being 30-years-in-the-making overnight sensations.
Opening theme by Los Musicos de Jose provided by Mevio’s Music Alley. “Thumb Hang” used with the kind permission of Anvil.
