47: 90s Diet Culture Time Capsule
Manage episode 441546532 series 3595664
The 90s had no shortage of messaging that revolved around diet (mostly all things no or low fat) and exercise. From NordicTrack to our trusty VHS tapes, there was no shortage of fitness trends! And this 1995 issue of Shape Magazine I found stored in my old closet reminds us of that. Amy Carlson joins me for the second half of our look at diet culture over the years. (Be sure to check out the 80s Diet Culture Time Capsule episode.) In this episode, we continue our journey down memory lane. We giggle about the Got Milk?® campaigns, 90s grunge fashion, and tenderly discuss fat phobia and so-called "success stories". After looking at the lies women were told in the 90s, we shift our focus to the messaging for this podcast and my prayer for this show.
In this episode, you will:
- Discover what we miss from the funky fresh 90s.
- Uncover the messaging around fat in the 90s.
- Learn about the big mission for this podcast & how this all fits together.
*Please note that this episode contains topics such as anorexia and bulimia which may be sensitive for some listeners.
