With environmental concerns and astronomical supermarket prices, having an edible garden at one’s fingertips has never looked more enticing. So, this week on On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra chats with horticulture expert Lauren Kurtz to learn more about what it takes to start and maintain a home kitchen garden.

Having graduated from the University of Connecticut with a PhD in Plant Science, Lauren’s research focuses on horticulture and plant breeding of hemp. Prior to graduate school, she worked in ecological horticulture and environmental education, and additionally, as a horticulture content editor for Wikihow. Currently, she serves as an invasive species outreach specialist at her alma mater, working with land managers, government agencies, scientists, and the public to navigate best practices for managing invasive plants in Connecticut.

In this episode, Lauren Kurtz expresses that herbs add color, texture, and various flavors to food, transforming ordinary meals into culinary delights, sharing her personal list of must-have herbs for anyone looking to start a home kitchen garden. To add, she outlines the first steps required in growing a herb garden.
