In this episode, David will discuss the organizational story behind his non-profit organization, All Hands Volunteers. He'll talk about how and why he founded it, the challenges of starting a small international program, and some aspects of volunteering. He'll share his personal experience of Katrina, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and the 2011 Japan tsunami, in each case personally arriving in the disaster zone in the first week to decide how to launch a project.
About David Campbell:
David Campbell has been a technology executive, corporate board member, and humanitarian field volunteer. He went to Thailand immediately after the 2004 Asian tsunami and became one of the founders of HandsOnThailand.org, which brought over 200 volunteers and several hundred thousand dollars to assist in the rebuilding of five Phuket fishing villages.
After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, David joined with several other volunteers to establish Hands On USA. After one week on-site, the team had an operations center in Biloxi, MS, fifty volunteers committed and en route, and dozens of projects launched. In total, over 1,500 volunteers helped serve the victims of Katrina. In 2010 this volunteer response model became known as All Hands Volunteers and has now executed many projects in the US and overseas. The organization merged with Happy Hearts Fund in 2017 and is now known as All Hands and Hearts. David Campbell stepped down as chair of the AHAH board in December 2021.
