Welcome to The Daily Quote - a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I’m your host, Andrew McGivern, and today is August 14th...
Today’s national holiday is one you might not have expected to hear about—World Lizard Day. Yes, you heard that right. A day dedicated to celebrating those scaly, sometimes sly, and always intriguing reptiles that have slithered or scurried their way into myths, movies, and even some people’s hearts.
Now, before you start wondering how on earth lizards relate to your day, let me share a quote that I think ties it all together. It’s from Aesop, the ancient Greek fabulist, who knew a thing or two about the animal kingdom and the lessons it could teach us. He said:
"Slow but steady wins the race."
Aesop’s fable of the tortoise and the hare is a story we’ve all heard, but what if I told you that a lizard might just embody that moral even better? Think about it. Lizards are creatures of patience, resilience, and persistence. They don’t rush. They don’t panic. They adapt, blend in, wait for the right moment, and then, with precision, they make their move.
On this World Lizard Day, let’s look beyond the scales and the flicking tongues. Imagine the lizard, sunning itself on a rock, seemingly motionless, yet always aware, always ready. It’s not in a hurry, but when it decides to act, it’s swift and decisive. It reminds us that sometimes, the best way to tackle the challenges of our own lives is not with speed, but with strategy. Not with haste, but with thoughtful persistence.
In our fast-paced world, where everyone seems to be running a race, chasing the next big thing, trying to outpace the competition, maybe what we need is a bit more lizard-like wisdom. Maybe we should slow down, take a moment to bask in the sun, and consider our next move carefully. We don’t always have to be the fastest. We don’t always have to be first. We just have to keep moving, steadily, purposefully, in the direction that feels right for us.
So today, as you go about your day, take a cue from our reptilian friends. Be patient. Be observant. And when the time is right, make your move with confidence. Whether you’re tackling a big project, working through a problem, or just trying to figure out the next step in your journey, remember that slow but steady does indeed win the race.
And hey, if you happen to see a lizard today, give it a little nod. It just might be the wisest creature you encounter.
And one more thing... Today also happens to be a special day local to where I live... there is a restaurant here in my area called Whitespot that has these cool Pirate Packs - which is a pirate ship with a burger, fries and chocolate coin... I think they throw in a desert too... its a good deal but unfortunately it is only for kids... Except for August 14th - on this day adults can have a pirate pack too! So that is where I'll be later today.
Thank you for spending a few minutes with me today on The Daily Quote. I hope this story about lizards and a simple quote from Aesop has given you something to think about as you navigate your own path.
Until next time, take it slow, but keep moving forward and I'll see again tomorrow for another daily quote!
