Welcome to The Daily Quote—a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I’m your host, Andrew McGivern, for November 30th. Today is Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to celebrating and supporting the small, local businesses that make our communities unique. They’re the little engines that could—the ones fueling creativity, perseverance, and the local economy. Yesterday was Black Friday... and its counterpart Buy Nothing Day. So whether or not you braved the Big Box Retail stores and massive chains offering 70% off - hey no judging - a good deal is a a good deal.

But whether you got a a great deal or not yesterday... today is the day to support the local small businesses that are working hard and providing great service to the community.

To honor this day, here’s a quote from American author and entrepreneur Chris Guillebeau, who said:

"If you make your business about helping others, you’ll always have plenty of work."

This quote hits right at the heart of what makes small businesses so special. When you walk into a small business, you can feel that personal touch—a genuine desire to help, to solve a problem, or to offer something you didn’t even know you needed.

Think about the local bookstore owner who remembers the genres you love, the baker who knows your favorite pastry, or the craft shop owner who’s excited to share tips for your next project. Small businesses thrive because they build relationships, not just transactions.

They’re not trying to sell you something you don’t need—they’re trying to make your day better. And isn’t that why we keep going back? Amazon might be fast, but has it ever handed you your package with a smile and a “How’s your family doing?” Exactly.

Small businesses remind us of what it means to care. They put people before profits, and ironically, that’s what keeps them going. When they focus on helping others, as Chris Guillebeau says, they don’t just survive—they thrive.

And when we shop small, we’re not just buying a product; we’re reinforcing a cycle of care and community. So today, on Small Business Saturday, let’s support the businesses that pour their heart and soul into helping others. Swing by your local independent café, browse a nearby boutique, or pick up something handmade.

Every purchase is a vote for passion, community, and the belief that businesses can be more than just bottom lines. As you go about your day, keep Chris Guillebeau’s words in mind: helping others creates endless opportunities—not just for business owners, but for all of us to connect in meaningful ways.

Thanks for joining me today on The Daily Quote. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off, and I’ll be back tomorrow with another quote to brighten your morning. Until then, take care—and don’t forget to shop small!

And thank you for listening to this small podcast today... and I'll see you tomorrow for another Daily Quote!
