Welcome to The Daily Quote — a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for November 25th. Today is National Play Day with Dad. Whether it’s building an epic pillow fort, teaming up for a video game, or letting Dad demonstrate how not to ride a skateboard... I had a bruised hip bone when I did my epic demo.
This is a day for dads to drop the serious stuff and just have fun. Dads have this unique talent for turning the simplest things into an adventure — a cardboard box becomes a rocket ship, or a game of tag transforms into an Olympic-level sport. And while these moments are playful and light, they also create bonds that last a lifetime.
Even if those memories involve, say, someone’s shoe mysteriously ending up on the roof. That one hasn't happened at my house.... yet! With that in mind, today’s quote comes from comedian Rob Delaney:
Who once said...
"The worst part about being a parent is when one of your kids farts and you have to pretend it wasn’t cool."
THIS!
Delaney perfectly captured the quiet dilemma of fatherhood. Dads, you know exactly what he’s talking about. Your kid lets one rip and there is that split second where you think, that was impressive... but you know you’ve got to stay cool, keep the dad poker face, and maybe offer a quick, “Use your manners,” to keep Mom happy. But let’s be honest: the very essence of being a dad is embracing these ridiculous moments. Parenthood isn’t about maintaining dignity; it’s about being the guy who laughs at fart jokes one minute and leads a formal tea party the next.
You know... the no elbows on the table rule. And then all of a sudden I CAN'T have my own elbows on the table. I think there has been a misinterpretation of the rules!
Anyway...
Rob Delaney reminds us that being a dad often means living in a weird middle ground — part role model, part referee, and part audience to your kids comedy show. So how does this connect to National Play Day with Dad? Well, today is about celebrating those perfectly imperfect moments — the ones where dads stop worrying about looking like a superhero and just focus on being present.
And hey Play Day With Dad can be free, you don't have to go to some expensive laser tag or crazy adventure zone place because as Steve Martin said (BONUS Quote)
"A father carries pictures where his money used to be."
Whether you’re running around a park, playing hide-and-seek, or applauding a particularly echo-y fart, these little things are the big things. So, my advice? Embrace today with open arms and maybe a clothespin for your nose.
Get goofy, let loose, and make some memories that will have your kids rolling their eyes in embarrassment — and secretly smiling — for years to come.
And with that...
I'll see YOU tomorrow for another Daily Quote.
