Twenty-five years ago, Todd Compton broke new ground with In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith, each chapter containing biographies of the thirty-three women Compton identified as having married the Mormon prophet. This new volume, In Sacred Loneliness: The Documents, contains the primary source material created by these women, which made up much of the narrative of the first book: diaries, letters, legal documents, and so forth. Smith's wives speak for themselves through these documents, giving readers a unique opportunity to appreciate them on an entirely new level. He will be in Utah next week to talk about and read from his new book at several events.
