Bermuda Triangle
Manage episode 358783141 series 3454205
The ocean has always seemed foreign to humans, and when there is bad weather or poor navigation, it can be extremely dangerous. This is true everywhere in the world. People have been enthralled by the fabled Bermuda Triangle (sometimes called the Devils Triangle) in the North Atlantic due to the strange disappearances of people, ships, and planes. As explanations for the unexplainable catastrophes, some people make claimed aliens kidnapping people for scientific research, the influence of the long-lost continent of Atlantis, a vortex that drags things into alternate dimensions, and other amazing tales. The Greater Antilles, Bermuda, and the South East coast of Florida form a loosely triangular shape to a region whose limits are not agreed upon, perhaps 500,000 square miles of ocean. Midway through the 20th century, the notion that the region was particularly subject to disappearances emerged, although most reliable sources reject the notion that there is any mystery. But since more than 50 boats and 20 aircraft are alleged to have inexplicably vanished here the discussion continues. Some of these incidents are surrounded by mysterious circumstances, including one in which the U.S. Navy bombers lost their bearings as they flew over the region; the planes were never recovered. In calm weather, other boats and planes have vanished from the region without even transmitting distress signals.
