The steel industry is one of the largest global CO2 emitters in the world, so achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 will be nothing short of a challenge. As an industry, we can be more successful in driving climate change solutions when we bring voices to the table across the supply chain, including producers, suppliers and NGOs (universities, civil society) to establish global standards for steel.
In this episode, we’ll explore the intricacies of the steel manufacturing and sustainability process, and understand just how many economic steps are required in order for us to move towards a better, more environmentally friendly world. Host David Kirkpatrick welcomes Annie Heaton, CEO of ResponsibleSteel™, a multistakeholder organization founded to bring together steelmakers, civil society, suppliers, and downstream users to provide a global standard and certification initiative for steel. Together, they discuss ResponsibleSteel’s admirable goal for a sustainable society; how steel often gets overlooked by the average person; the rigorous process of manufacturing a more environmentally safe version of steel; and the contrasting ways in which steel is manufactured in the first place!
