In today’s special episode, Rachel is thrilled to welcome back the trailblazer in size-inclusivity, Raquel Vélez! As we reflect on the ever-evolving fashion landscape, Raquel’s insights into the shift from body positivity to body neutrality are not only timely but revolutionary. She eloquently dissects the sensitive nature of industry jargon, advocating for language that uplifts without alienating. Our conversation is a masterclass in thoughtfulness, as we explore the profound implications of embracing our bodies for their strength and ability, rather than their physical form. Raquel's return shines a spotlight on the essential need for mindful communication, ensuring that every individual feels seen and cherished in the world of fashion.

This episode isn't just a discussion; it's a journey through the complex narrative of clothing sizes and the unique hurdles faced by the plus-size market. Together, we confront the myths that shroud clothing tags, stressing that comfort and confidence should always eclipse the arbitrary numbers that dictate size. We tackle the quandaries of vanity sizing and the elusive concept of "true to size" in a world where variety in body shape demands diverse sizing options. We delve into the challenging terrain of sustainable plus-size fashion, addressing consumer reservation, market misconceptions, and the ethical conundrum of crafting affordable yet ethical apparel.

Raquel Vélez is the Founder and CEO of Alpine Parrot, an outdoor apparel company whose mission is to celebrate and foster equitable access to the outside for people of size. In a previous life she was a robotics engineer and software engineering manager, but now she spends her time focusing on great fit, finding amazing materials, and building an inclusive community centered around body neutrality, spending time in nature, and finding joy in any environment. She was named one of Outside Magazine's Outsiders of the Year in 2021 and Well+Good Magazine's Changemakers in 2023.
