Greenland style kayaker and internationally recognized authority on cold water safety Moulton Avery has been on a decades-long mission to educate paddlers on the dangers of cold water immersion. In this interview he talks about how kayakers die in cold water through the mechanisms of cold shock, swimming failure, and hypothermia. His warnings of the risks of paddling in cold water without thermal protection were initially dismissed by prominent members of the sea kayaking industry because they feared losing customers, before wetsuits and drysuits eventually became the standard kayaking gear they are today.
