The announcement that the Snyder Cut of Justice League is set for release on HBO Max in 2021 has led to a startling number of hot takes from the media, the upshot of which is that this is a win for “toxic fandom.” I respectfully disagree, as this follows a long tradition of successful fan campaigns, asking for better treatments or resurrections of media properties such as Community, Firefly, Arrested Development, and more. If the Snyder Cut is in fact the result of a studio caving to bullying, it’s hardly precedent-setting. Many of these same media outlets have championed this sort of behavior in the past.
Cyborg actor Ray Fisher, meanwhile, is elated that the Snyder Cut is being released. His character had very little in the way of backstory, or anything resembling a character arc, in the Justice League movie that was released in theaters. He believes, as many are reporting, that it will include scenes he filmed which flesh out the character’s past and explain his actions and motivations.
