Twyford Growers is a group of people who meet at the Hurst Road allotments in Twyford each Thursday between March and October. They may have been referred to the gardening scheme by NHS social prescribers to alleviate feelings of anxiety, depression and/or loneliness, or they may have self-referred to enhance their physical and mental wellbeing, or simply volunteered to help cultivate the plot specially dedicated to Twyford Growers.
The initiative began in late 2020 after Councillor Rohana Abeywardana, now Chairman of Twyford Parish Council, was inspired by the success of a similar scheme elsewhere. It has been set up by a group of councillors, professionals, and enthusiastic individuals, headed up by Twyford Parish Council working with Involve, Age UK Berkshire and NHS Social Prescribers based at Twyford Surgery. The scheme already won recognition in 2021 through the RHS Britain in Bloom 'It's Your Neighbourhood' community awards.
Twyford Growers take part in therapeutic gardening activities led by professional gardener and horticultural therapist Christina Hughes Nind. For the RG10 Podcast, Ben visited the Hurst Road allotments one Thursday over the summer and learnt more about the scheme from Christina. He also spoke to Linda, one of the regular Twyford Growers, who explained what she enjoys about the project.
