You can set goals for the new year, but without a goal-setting strategy will you be able to achieve the goals?

The practice of goal-setting can be simplified and you can set more achievable goals by aligning them with your values. In addition, gratitude helps achieve goals.

Goal-setting strategy simplified

Establish your goals using a strategy that will keep you on track to achieve them and watch your business grow. You may feel fatigued or experience burnout if you don't see results fast enough or if you set goals that are too big to achieve in a reasonable amount of time. In addition, avoid setting too many goals or you may become overwhelmed because you won't know where to focus.

Simplify the goal-setting strategy

Warren Buffet, one of the richest men in the world, has a goal-setting process that has worked well for him and others that he's mentored. Buffet's goal-setting strategy is to make a list of your top 25 goals. Review the list and circle the 5 goals that are priority or have urgency. The other 20 are no longer goals. Set them aside and only focus on the top 5.

Now that you have your top 5 goals to work on, I like to use this strategy. Decide which of the 5 is of utmost urgency.

For example, my client is in desperate need of creating processes and procedures and automating as much as possible. Without processes and procedures, things are falling through the cracks. In addition, she's the only person in the office who can do what needs to be done. She has other goals for the year, the biggest, to franchise her business. Before she can franchise, she has to have the backend running smoothly, like clockwork. Likewise, this goal has to be achieved before she can reach the goal of stepping away from the day-to-day operations of the business to do activities that will generate growth and enable her to move forward with the franchise.

Once you've prioritized your goals, it's time to break them down into action steps and a timeline. The best thing you can do is break down each goal into quarterly, monthly, and weekly objectives. Breaking goals into smaller steps will help you stay focused, see progress, and avoid being overwhelmed.

To help stay focused, don't add more than three objectives to your calendar per week. Break the three down to daily action items that will help you achieve the week's objective. But no more than three action items per day because you need to allow space in your day to accomplish other tasks and work in your business. Limiting the number of tasks will again help avoid burnout, overwhelm, or overthinking.
