Intersectionality is a theoretical framework for understanding how race and gender combine to create a uniquely situated experience of oppression. Now more than ever, we must look boldly at the reality of race and gender bias in the criminal justice system. This episode will lift marginalized and intersectional identities often eclipsed in the conversation surrounding mass incarceration: LGBTQ youth, Black mothers, and Black people with disabilities. We speak to Alanna Garret-Ferguson, a Cleveland based organizer for New Voices for Reproductive Justice and Aquia, a black woman held pretrial.
