This week’s podcast hosted by Sean Price of Velez Managed Services is with Dwight Strayer.

Dwight Strayer COO of Service Express, actually started off as a field engineer. We find out that his interest in computers grew from a new club opening in his high school days, the computer class club. Learning ancient languages such as Pascal and Fortran, originally leaning into the programming side of computers.

Dwight originally attended a university to receive a business degree, but his curiosity for computers kept growing, so he decided to transfer to ITT tech to do an electrical engineering degree. Upon completing his associate degree, he found a small start-up company where the two business owners buy and sell IT equipment (decks) and he had a job offer from them at the age of 23. Dwight worked for some time in a warehouse where the owner the company was leasing the space from was incredibly cheap, often making Dwight and his fellow colleagues work without heating in the cold and with the lights off! His immediate goal was to learn as much as he could and to create so much value that no one had to leave the office, so the sales associates could sell as much as possible.

Today we go into several topics, including the setup of Service express and how Dwight managed to learn as much as he can working close with their two owners at the time. Revealing his values, beliefs, and thoughts on success, and how one of the best ways to be a high achieving businessperson is to find a way to help people.

“Get in a company where you have direct access to the owners, where you can look them in the eye, see and understand their pain points and add value to them.”- Dwight Strayer.
