As a veterinarian in general veterinary practice, I would occasionally get asked for advice on sick fish. Our training at Vet School on aquatic medicine was pretty sparse and when a call came in for a goldfish floating upside down or an unsightly growth on the side of a guppy, I would try to look really busy or head for the door as if I had somewhere else important to be. If avoidance didn’t work, I would blow the dust off a couple of old texts on aquatic medicine I have to try and find an answer.
With more people living in apartments meaning less space for conventional pets, keeping an aquarium is a lot more common these days. The price paid for a number of fish also means that the same standard of care that is given to cats and dogs is also expected for fish. There are now veterinarians who have taken their training to a new level. In this podcast I talk to Lindsay Thomas, a UK based vet with a special interest in fish medicine and find out a bit more about fish medicine including how do you give a pill to a fish.
