Last week the internet was sent into a frenzy after Netflix released Dave Chappelle's latest comedy special "The Closer". Lines were drawn in the sand (on social media) as people debated whether the famed comedian was 'punching down' at trans people. For some, the overarching theme of the special was to point out the hypocrisy of selective outrage & "woke" culture. Chappelle made the argument that the plight of other marginalized groups are often prioritized over that of Black, brown, & indigenous people.

Ironically that theory was quickly put to the test after a New York times report revealed several email messages dating back as far as 2011 where Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden made some disparaging remarks about NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith's physical appearance (big lips trope) & competency (Dumb). No disciplinary action was taken in the days following the release of the report even as it was widely circulated in articles & discussed on news programs. It was only after the revelation that Gruden had also made homophobic & misogynistic remarks about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, openly gay player Michael Sam, & others that the Raiders organization "allowed" the now disgraced coach to resign on his own volition.

Was Chappelle right?

Does a marginalized group hierarchy exist in which certain groups get prioritized over others, & if so, who gets to decide the pecking order? This week the Vexed Intellects address the complex questions surrounding this conundrum.

Plus...

The Kyrie Irving vaccination saga, the embarrassing defeat of Deontay Wilder, Jamie Lee Curtis comments on plastic surgery wiping out generations of beauty, modern female intrasexual competition, the expectations of return on investment in dating, & a woman who sued the insurance company of a guy she caught an STD from during a passionate backseat romp.

These topics & much, much, more on this episode of The Vexed Intellects!
