This week, Sam and Sarah talk about the latest news in the world of drug policy: Monitoring the Future, the an annual survey done by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and researchers at the University of Michigan, found that vaping among 8, 10, and 12 graders has gone up since last year. The people behind the failed ResponsibleOhio campaign for marijuana legalization are trying again in 2018, with some major changes to their proposal. The FDA is warning the makers of snortable cacao and “legal lean” about what they’re selling to the public. And in a holiday-themed journal article, researchers in the UK found that the size of wine glasses has increased seven-fold over the past three centuries. Turn on, tune in, and TWiD out!

• In a story our long-time listeners might remember, a Phoenix man forced to eat marijuana by three police officers reached a settlement with the city for $100,000 this week.
• The city council in Hartford, Connecticut’s capital, unanimously endorsed marijuana legalization on Monday. The resolution called on the state to legalize marijuana in 2018, and “requests the Hartford Delegation insist on measures to ensure Racial Equity in ownership and employment of new cannabis related business.”
• The Munich Police have reimbursed a German medical marijuana patient after officers antagonized him on the street and destroying the 0.3 grams in his possession. He will receive 6.60 and plans to donate it to the German Hemp Association.
• Regulators in Colorado have suspended 26 marijuana business licenses, raided 8 locations, and arrested 12 people associated with a company called Sweet Leaf, which operates state-licensed businesses in Denver and Aurora. While multiple agencies in Colorado are involved with the investigation, Yahoo News reports that no federal agencies were involved.

Forecast:

• This week the New Zealand government will debate legislation which would make medical cannabis more accessible to people suffering from chronic pain or terminal illness. The legislation is not related to the referendum on full legalization expected before 2020.
• Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, said at a press briefing on Friday that “next year we want to take on criminal justice reform,” as reported by Tom Angell on Twitter.
