No More Written Tests for Most Drivers 70+ in California
Manage episode 444210806 series 3504733
Starting this October, most California drivers aged 70 or older won't need to take a written knowledge test when renewing their licenses.
However, certain drivers will still need to take the knowledge test. These include:
📌First-time drivers
📌Drivers with a poor driving record .
📌Drivers with two or more accidents in the past two years.
📌Drivers with three or more accidents in the past three years.
📌Drivers with a DUI suspension in the past two years
📌Drivers with a violation point count greater than one in the past two years.
Check the stats! According to the National Safety Council, motorists aged 65 to 74 accounted for 13.4% of all licensed drivers. However, they represented only 7.1% of drivers involved in all crashes and 8.8% of drivers in fatal crashes.
Why are fatalities more common among older drivers? As drivers age, their physical vulnerabilities, such as slower reaction times, decreased vision, and fragility, play a role in the severity of crashes. Even a relatively minor crash can be life-threatening for older individuals due to these factors.
