There are studies that prove that owning your own business can reduce your rate of burnout. Tiffany Riley, a licensed Vet Tech in Montana, shares how she found the opportunity to create a new role in her industry that not only reduced her burnout but reignited her passion for animal care.
Lack of autonomy, lack of contribution control, lack of choice, and lack of developmental opportunities…are among some of the big reasons that people leave veterinary medicine with overwhelm and burnout. Contributing to this are also short-staffed clinics and too many cases, cases that often do not warrant a full vet visit. Out of this Tiffany was inspired to create Tiffany’s Animal Care.
Tiffany’s business allows her to have full autonomy to choose the cases she wants to work with and the freedom to turn down cases to respect her mental load. We discuss compassion fatigue related to Economic Euthanasia or increased cases of Parvo Puppies, that lead to these tough decisions and clinic overwhelm. Her work is about providing appropriate animal care and relieving pressure from busy clinics. As she develops her relationships, she is growing from direct client care to more clinic partnerships and referrals.
If starting a business in the veterinary industry seems like something that's right for you, Tiffany’s advice is just to get started. Be resilient and make adjustments later. Along with these three tips:
-Research, understand, and work under your state's laws
-Make connections with other business owners, even outside of the vet industry
-Secure protection through bank accounts, business formation, and insurance
Not only has Tiffany found a great way to heal her own fatigue and build a different future for herself, but she has found a way to contribute to the industry, clients, and patients in a big way!
What’s Inside:

  • The correlation between self-employment and reduced burnout.
  • A solution to the lack of vet techs and overcrowded clinics.
  • Getting started with your own animal care business.
  • Reigniting passion in the vet industry.
  • Contributing to the clients and patients in need in the animal care world.
