GRATEFULNESS

  • I am grateful for Croissants – every once in a while I get some from the store. Almost always to make a specific thing. This last weekend it was for a grilled BLT. It was magical.
  • I am grateful for mouthwash – it is amazing that even after brushing, flossing, and rinsing – how much stuff can still come out from rinsing your mouth out with mouthwash
  • I am grateful for Mother Nature’s sense of decor – even though much in our yard looks unmanaged right now, it still looks amazing

HISTORIC TODAY

  • 1942: The Manhattan Project, a top-secret research and development project aimed at creating the first atomic bomb, begins. Oppenheimer
  • 1961: Berlin becomes completely divided as the borders between East and West Berlin are sealed.
  • 1818: Lucy Stone, American suffragist and women’s rights advocate.
  • 1860: Annie Oakley, American sharpshooter and entertainer.
  • 1899: Alfred Hitchcock, English filmmaker known for his significant contributions to suspense and psychological thriller genres.

The 3 Things

THING 1

  • When Michigan man Corey Harris joined a court Zoom call in a case involving driving with a suspended license, the judge had an immediate question for him: “Are you driving?” Harris replied: “Actually, I’m pulling into my doctor’s office … So just give me one second. I’m parking right now.” Video of the May 15 court appearance in Ann Arbor shows that public defenders “looked disappointed and just as bewildered as the judge,” KTLA reports.
  • Assistant public defender Natalie Tate moved to adjourn the case for four weeks “if the court would allow,” but District Judge J. Cedric Simpson didn’t allow it. “OK, so maybe I don’t understand something,” he said. “This is a driving while license suspended, and he was just driving, and he didn’t have a license.” Tate replied, “That is correct, your honor.”
  • Simpson revoked Harris’ bond and ordered him to report to the county jail by 6pm.

THING 2

Colin Jost sustained a foot injury while covering the 2024 Olympics in Tahiti. The injury occurred when he stepped on a coral reef, leading to a staph infection. In addition to the foot injury, Jost also suffered from an ear infection, which he humorously described as leaving him “legally a leper” during a conversation with NBC’s Mike Tirico. Due to these health issues, Jost had to exit his role as a correspondent for the Paris Olympics

THING 3

  • Trump Campaign Hacked: The Trump campaign has suggested that the hack was orchestrated by Iranian hackers. This claim is supported by a Microsoft report indicating that a group associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps conducted a spear-phishing attack targeting a high-ranking official in a U.S. presidential campaign.
  • Nature of the Hack: The breach involved the unauthorized acquisition of internal communications and documents from the Trump campaign. Some of these documents, including a research dossier on Trump’s potential running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, were leaked to Politico.
